Loosely inserted is an als from the author to Mr Messer thanking him for his help and enclosing a copy of the book. Also written to the top of the front free endpaper is "To the Senior King's Engineer, with the author's best wishes, November 1957". Endpapers browned. Occasional light foxing to text pages, overall a VG association copy.

The leather is slightly rubbed and bumped. Volume 1: The front hinge has burst, causing the front cover and end sheet to be loose. Heraldic ex-Libris (Serjeantson of Hanlith) in the front inner covers. Volume 1 with an engraved portrait of the author as a frontispiece. The inner cover and end caps are more glue-shaded along the edges, with a slight touch on the title page and the last page. The interior itself is clean and firm. Overall, really well preserved, decorative specimen. --- 7 Original-Ganzlederbände mit Kurztitel und Bandnummer in Goldprägung auf rotem und grünem Rückenschild, floralem Rückenschmuck, Kantenvergoldungen sowie rotem Dreiseitenschnitt. 'The design of this publication is to assist civil engineers and millwrights in calculating the effect of mechanics' The Monthly Review 1802 Feb. Of the first edition 'The Critical Review; or, Annals of Literature' Vol. XXXIII, 1801 states 'We have seen nothing more satisfactory on this subject than these short Essays. The author joins experiment to calculation; and his fourth essay, on the simplification of machinery, is particularly valuable'. Anderton page 107.

Oblong folio (25 x 33cm). 12 pages. Contemporaneously bound in ornate floral patterned green and gilt textured 'Dutch' wrappers. Lower right outer corner missing throughout, torn or nibbled outside the plate mark, save on page 7 where text very slightly affected. Plate printed. Inscribed to "El[izabeth] Rose, Presented to her by Mrs. Grant of Grant, Febry, 20th, 1765" in brown ink on title page. Notwithstanding the damage to the lower corner, this is a beautiful and highyl decorative item.

Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 8vo., 21 (3) pp., small neat closed tear to extreme top right-hand corner of title-page, some light occasional staining, some fore-edges untrimmed as usual, bound in later quarter morocco backed boards, slighty chipped at top of spine with some light rubbing. A generally VG copy of this rare work. The ESTC collation for this pamphlet does not call for a frontispiece, but some of the fifteen copies recorded to report a plate. The frontispiece would infact appear to be a reproduction of the 17th century engraved title-page for Taylor's Holy Living; the relevance of this image was no doubt not immediately obvious to early binders, and the plate was therefore discarded. A remarkable squabble over copyright, by the grandson of the bookseller Richard Royston , and the son of Royston's successor Luke Meredith. Earlier in the year the Richard Steele had published, through Jacob Tonson, a compilation called The Ladies Library; the text had been edited for Steele by Bishop Berkeley. "The work is a sort of mixed grill, improvingly arranged, of extracts from seventeenth-century divines, with large chunks from [Jeremy] Taylor, and predominantly from Holy Living. Royston Meredith, who was evidently Royston's, and co-heir with his sister Elizabeth Meredith, complained that he was being robbed of his literary property (other works originally published by Royston, besides those by Taylor, were rifled to fill The Ladies Library); he wrote to Steele and accused him of theft from 'two poor orphans who had very little else to subsist on.' The orphans were presumably himself and his sister. Later he threatened proceedings on account of his rights in Taylor's works. Steele retorted with his intention to do 'all the good offices I can to the reverend author's grandchild now in town.' 4to. 119pp. Printed boards with a decorative border, front & rear. Engraved title page. This copy has been rebacked using the original printed boards, backed with a roughly-cut leather strip on the spine, the signatures neatly strengthened at the gutters with blue-gray paper tape. Some large chips from the leather at the upper spine, printed boards rubbed and quite worn at corners; in general a sound, complete, very good copy. Ownership signature on the upper title dated 1869. Author's signature and "No. 8" in holograph at the head of the first music page (Pg. 11). Of two known varieties of the title page, this is of the variety having the text beneath the author's name in script, no artist or engraver name beneath the image, "EDINBURGH" in lighter type with no colon, less punctuation within the title text, and no "Entd. In Stationers Hall" or "Price" text at the bottom. Also this variety omits the names of Doig and Stirling, and James Smith, from the imprint. The boat at the right side of the image has only three figures in it; the image on the later title shows four figures. We theorize that this is an early copy, likely for patrons or subscribers, based on the "No. 8" in the author's holograph on Page 11, and the overall earlier state of the title page. The copy held at the University of Western Ontario, with the later variant of the title page, has the author's signature in the same location on Page 11, with "No. 206" by his signature (which provides an approximation of the minimum number of copies issued). Also the presence of the Copyright and Price text at the bottom of the title, and the addition of publisher's names to the imprint, suggests that it is of the variety offered for sale to the public. Text added to the later title indicates that the image on the title is Drawn by J. Brooks, Engraved by R. Scott, Edin. The text on the printed boards is somewhat different, though very similar to the title, and includes a section referring to the figures in the title vignette. The imprint on the boards includes other booksellers, and beneath the date of 1816 is the text: "[230 Melodies - Price of the First Impression to its Original Patrons, One Guinea]". A scarce compilation of Highland music, "being chiefly acquired during the Interesting Period from 1715 to 1745.", edited by Captain Fraser, a fiddler and composer. A difficult book to find complete.

Gilt lettering and decoration to spine. 10.75ins x 8ins, xx, 432pp, [vi](technical terms, index, errata) plus sepia frontis portrait, six sepia plates, 2 plates depicting gun parts (one folding), a large folding plate detailing game laws and two folding charts at the rear being a Sportsmans weekly Journal and a Breeding Journal. Pages 215-220 were cancelled in later issues because " the author had been a little too outspoken over a controversy concerning the Manton Patent Breech, that arose between Mr Manton and the Duke of Richmond". Some occasional light foxing but overall a VG handsomely bound volume.
