Add to basketLeather. Condition: Very Good. The second edition of Oliver Goldsmith's popular Roman History, together with Volume II of John Brown's influential 18th century critique of British manners and morals. In contemporary full calf bindings. An appealing group of eighteenth-century historical and social commentary, compromising: The second edition of Goldsmith's Roman History, published in two volumes in 1770. The work was first published in London in 1769. ESTC No.: T146145. With Volume II only of John Brown's An Estimate of the Manners and Principles of the Times, published by L. Davis and C. Reymers, 1758. This imprint corresponds to the seventh edition of Brown's work. Oliver Goldsmith (1728-1774) was an Irish novelist, poet, playwright and essayist, and one of the leading literary figures of 18th century Britain. He is best remembered for The Vicar of Wakefield, The Deserted Village and the comedy She Stoops to Conquer. John Brown (1715-1766) was an English clergyman, essayist and moralist. His Estimate of the Manners and Principles of the Times offered a highly critical assessment of contemporary British society. An attractive group, bringing together Goldsmith"s accessible account of Roman history with Brown"s trenchant critique of 18th century British society. Externally, sound. Joints of "Roman" cracked, hinges slightly strained with wear to gutters, but holding. Discolouration to perimeters of boards and spines. Lacking spine label of "Manners." Loss to spine labels of "Rome." Minor chipping to calf at spine ends, more so to "Rome." The odd handling and scuff mark to boards with slight rubbing. Previous bookseller's discreet label to front paste down of vol I of "Rome." Contemporary ownership inscription to paste downs of "Rome." Discolouration from binder's glue to endpapers of "Rome." Bookplate of Joseph Tasker to front free endpaper of "Manners." Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean, if slightly age toned. Light soiling to first and last few leaves. The odd light spot and handling mark to fore edge. Very Good. None (illustrator). book.…
