"The following Satire is not by a Frenchman, as the name Lionel Julien Pensée indicates, but by a true English person. April 28th, 1851". Plates loose in original printed wraps, title label pasted to front cover, inscribed in ink to front wrap (not legible) dated 1851. No copy found and Lionel Julien Pensée not identified. The Adventures of a Footboy eventually ends badly in America, with satirical comment throughout on the Roman Catholic Confessional and its adverse influence on the Footboy and his involvement with Puseyites.…

Full Calf. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Album of 100 large mounted caricature lithographs mostly satirizing the Duke of Wellington as Prime Minister, and occasionally taking aim at others in the government. Oblong Folio, 39 by 52.5 cm. There is one mounted print per page, with just one page having two half-sized prints. There is also a lithographed title page, the lithograph mounted. The most typical dimensions of the prints are 27 by 33 cm, but there are some larger, some smaller. The majority are horizontally-oriented, but there is no shortage of vertically arranged prints as well. The caricatures, here, are often barely so, as Doyle was more prone to rendering his subjects close to their actual appearance. Of course, the Duke of Wellington, with his prominent Roman nose, hardly required facial exaggeration, as his actual face did much of the caricaturist's work already. The most consistent strain running through the album is the presence of Wellington, who was Prime Minister at the time. The album covers the entirety of his ministry, in fact. Otherwise, the style of artwork is rather varied. Sometimes the print is chock-a-block with dialogue bubbles, while there are a good many without any text other than a short caption below. Some prints are close to minimalist line drawings, while others are more fully realized artwork. At the time this album was created, Doyle was at the height of his powers and popularity, after which his renown or cachet as a caricaturist was to slowly decline until he was mostly forgotten as a caricaturist when he died. That said, he is credited as of seminal importance for the type of caricature that was to be the stock-in-trade of later British caricaturists, including his more famous son, Richard Doyle, and associated with Punch, a publication begun in 1841. The caricatures are also mounted onto the heavy card leaves, with both the rectos and versos used. The underlying cards are foxed, with a heavy nebula of browning around their perimeter. The card stock is also somewhat brittle, which has led to some edge chipping -- not that there is a lot of such chipping. The prints themselves are often heavily browned, with the primary instigator for this being the paste used to mount them. This is mixed with the foxing, which can vary from light to heavy. We should think that this particular issue would apply to any other copy of the work, though. The binding is rather impressive, and remains attractive despite a good amount of scratches, abrasions, stains. The spine has been professionally rebacked, with the original spine preserved and remounted. Notwithstanding all these qualifications, we think the album remains an attractive copy/.…
