Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. April 2020: the country is deep in the first lockdown as a result of coronavirus. Young people are left rootless, without school or friends and isolated at home. In this enforced alienation a creative writing competition, Generation Lockdown Writes, was launched for young people from the ages of seven to 17. The only rule was that submissions to the competition had to provide an insight into what life was like for them in lockdown to open up windows of homes and experiences across the UK. Some of Britains finest authors for young people stepped in to judge the ten individual categories, and the entries flooded in. Generation Lockdown Writes is the stunning final collection of the winning entries, chosen from over six thousand entries. The beautiful and varied pieces provide a unique insight into what life was really like for young people during this historical moment across Britain. We enter many different worlds, and are given a remarkable insight into the range of emotions that young people felt. From moments of fear to joy, this is a collection of writing that will linger in the memory for a long time.Profits from the sale of this book will be donated to BookTrust. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The concept of desirable difficulties is central to many of the evidence-informed strategies - such as spaced practice, retrieval practice and interleaving - that have become so prevalent in recent years, and so are one of the most crucial building blocks of cognitive science. Based on the finding that instruction and tasks most effective for long-term learning often hamper short-term performance, they are also one of the most counter-intuitive.In their seminal work, Elizabeth and Robert Bjork identified four desirable difficulties - so called because they improve long-term retention and transfer while making learning seem more challenging - including varying the conditions of practice, spacing, interleaving and practice testing.Isaac Moore and Jade Pearce build on this, explaining each strategy in detail including a summary of the research evidence that supports each difficulty, how it might look in the classroom and how it might be implemented with the greatest impact. They also discuss why students often fail to use these strategies in their independent study (despite their effectiveness) and how teachers and school leaders may encourage students to use them more. Succinct summaries and case studies from a range of practitioners will enable all readers to utilise desirable difficulties in their own classrooms and beyond. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Im not sure how to help my child with schoolwork. I see my child study for tests and not do well. How much help is too much? Or Not enough? As a parent, do you have questions like these? For students reading this book, have you ever thought: I studied all night and didnt do well on the test? Do you question why spending more time on schoolwork often does not reflect increased learning or higher grades? We all think we know how to study. Many of us have spent years in educational settings. Because we have learned, do we know how learning occurs? Often the answer is no. Fewer than 10% of students have parents who are certified educators. Where can the other 90% of parents go to find answers? If you are a student, where can you go to find out how to maximize learning while spending less time doing so? The answer is this guide. Patrice Bain has shown thousands of students with a wide range of abilities how to increase school performance. Having worked with cognitive scientists in the classroom for over half of her 25+ year teaching career, Bain knows how students learn and has developed strategies that increase memory, grades and retention of material. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Imagine having to draw dots each time we wanted to do a sum like 3+4. Or having to sound out every word we read, no matter how many times we've seen it before. Having well-consolidated memories for how to do these things can help us avoid these difficulties, which is why consolidation should be a key goal of effective teaching. Helping students consolidate knowledge is a crucial stepping stone in allowing them to navigate problems and develop their knowledge.Building on the hugely influential paper by John Dunlosky, Amarbeer Singh Gill looks at ways teachers can use recommendations from 'Strengthening the Student Toolbox' to consolidate knowledge and enhance the learning that takes place in their classrooms. Each strategy is looked at in detail, delving into the conditions needed to help the strategies work, how they might look in classrooms, things to be mindful of when translating research into practice, and case studies from current teachers who describe how they've used these strategies.By harnessing the power of these strategies we can make it more likely that our students will succeed not just whilst they're in our classrooms, but also well beyond by giving them the tools they need for lifelong learning. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. How do you embed excellence into schools' everyday practices, not as an incidental or an accident, but as an actual ethic? Like the original book, this book is not a manual but what it offers is a thorough analysis of the Ethic of Excellence toolkit strategies, which can be applied across all ages and phases. The examination is placed within a framework of relevant research and is aimed at corroborating Bergers strategies and ethics, as they apply to classroom practice. The book is written with the full support, and the ethical guidance of the author of 'An Ethic of Excellence: Building a Culture of Craftsmanship with Students', Ron Berger. Each chapter exemplifies the active ingredients for each of the key principles and underpins them with evidence-informed practice and practical examples, from across the curriculum. The book offers case studies and insights from senior leaders and teachers on what excellence looks like, within their contexts. Whilst school improvement is never finished, the book offers a manual for identifying Bergers principles of excellence. Through focused and evidence-informed offering, it considers how to make excellence as an ethic permanent across any school and any curriculum. Headteacher Sonia Thompson examines the principles and themes of Ron Berger's An Ethic of Excellence. Each chapter exemplifies the active ingredients for each of the key principles of the book and underpins them with evidence-informed practice and practical examples, from across the curriculum. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Teaching at sentence level is essential to improve writing. Knowing this, I desperately searched for a book packed full of sentence models that I could use to inspire my students. On discovering that no such book existed, I spent the next year poring over hundreds and hundreds of books to tap into the magic formula of what makes a great sentence. I sorted all these fantastic sentence structures into the domains through which we write stories: action, setting, character, feelings, physical effects, thoughts, the senses, and dialogue. This book contains hundreds of those sentence models. Each chapter also contains practical advice on effectively teaching the different aspects of story writing. The sentences can be used as creative writing exercises, inspiration for your exemplary text, or ideas for writing lessons. This book will reveal the magic formula behind great writing and give you a secret window into how this writing is created. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Generative Learning in Action helps to answer the question: which activities can students carry out to create meaningful learning? It does this by considering how we, as teachers, can implement the eight strategies for generative learning set out in the work of Fiorella and Mayer in their seminal 2015 work Learning as a Generative Activity: Eight Learning Strategies that Promote Learning. At a time when a great deal of attention has been paid to the teaching and learning from the perspective of effective instruction, Generative Learning looks at the flip side of coin and considers what is happening in the minds of the learner. This book takes a teachers-eye view of a range of theories of learning and keeps their application to the classroom firmly in mind through the use of case studies and reference to day to day practice. Generative Learning in Action also discusses the key considerations and potential limitations of each of the strategies, as well as how you could implement these in your own practice and more widely across a school. The authors bring a wealth of experience to this topic. Zoe Enser was a classroom English teacher for over 20 years as well as head of department and school leader in charge of improving teaching and learning. She is now lead specialist advisor for Kent with The Education People. Mark Enser has been a geography teacher for the best part of two decades as well as a head of department and research lead. He is the author of Making Every Geography Lesson Count and Teach Like Nobody's Watching as well as a TES columnist. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Written under the guidance and with the support of Dylan Wiliam, Kate Jones writes about five formative assessment strategies in action in the classroom, with a foreword from Professor John Hattie. Building on the highly successful work of Wiliam and Siobhan Leahy, ideas are shared and misconceptions with formative assessment are addressed with lots of practical advice. Formative assessment in action focuses on five evidence-informed strategies that the teacher can use to support their learners to make progress. Formative assessment can help both the teacher and student understand what needs to be learned and how this can be achieved. During the learning process, formative assessment can identify students' progress as well as highlighting gaps in their knowledge and understanding, therefore giving the teacher useful insight as to what feedback and instruction can be provided to continue to move learners forward. Formative assessment takes place during the learning process. It continually informs the teacher and student as to how learning can move forward as it is happening. This is different to summative assessment, which focuses on the evaluation of student learning at the end of the process. There's a range of case studies from different subjects and key stages to show how formative assessment can be embedded across a curriculum successfully. Written under the guidance and with the support of Dylan Wiliam, Kate Jones writes about five formative assessment strategies in action in the classroom. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. American psychologist and psychiatrist David Ausubel is well known for his famous quote:"The most important single factor influencing learning is what the learner already knows. Ascertain this and teach him accordingly" (Ausubel, 1968, vi).But few know about the richness and importance of his assimilation theory of meaningful learning and retention, which holds many more instruction-altering insights. One of the main reasons why this theory is so important is because it focuses on the end goal teachers are after: teachers don't want students to memorise distinct ideas; teachers want students to develop vast bodies of knowledge in the subjects they are taught. Ausubel explains that the only way to achieve this is through supporting students to learn meaningfully. This book explores the key elements of the theory and what it means to learn meaningfully. It then links the theory to highly practical implications teachers can use day-to-day in all aspects of their teaching. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In 1991 Allan Collins, John Seely Brown and Ann Holum published 'Cognitive Apprenticeship: Making Thinking Visible'. Nearly a quarter of a century later John Tomsett encountered their paper and since then, it has influenced his teaching immeasurably. Collins et al. believed that 'domain (subject) knowledge provides insufficient clues for many students about how to actually go about solving problems and carrying out tasks in a domain'. They believed that you had to make expert subject thinking visible to students. Consequently, Tomsett developed a number of techniques which made his expert subject thinking visible to his students, to great effect. Beyond his own practice, the principles behind Collins et als paper have been woven throughout Huntington School in York, where Tomsett is headteacher, a research school whose teachers are committed to developing evidence-informed classroom practice. In this book, a number of Huntington School teachers discuss, in a series of brief essays, what they consider to be the expert thought processes specific to their individual subject domains. They explain in detail how they use cognitive apprenticeship techniques 'in action' to make their disciplinary thinking visible and help their students learn those same expert thought processes. This book is a priceless contribution to the current debate about the curriculum and how it is taught in our schools. The 1991 paper 'Cognitive Apprenticeship: Making Thinking Visible' greatly influenced the teaching of John Tomsett, headteacher at Huntington School in York.
