This book explores the world of present-day travel andtourism to Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan with words and images based on actual happenings. The journal, Kafkanistan, explores how we are all influenced by the media. Believing that many of us will never visit the region and all we know about it is what we read in the newspapers and what we see on television, the authors were interested in perceptions based on the media versus their reality as visitors. These are, through first-hand experience and interviews with the local people and the objects in their lives, documented in this book. However, this is not a straightforward journal, because through their inquiry, the travelers discovered that the "real" world of the tourist this region has, is so bizarre, that it is a surreal one. Thus each man adopted an identity, to better integrate in his travels through the universe of "Kafkanistan," to aptly describe their experiences. Here is an image of a world that is based on and which represents actual happenings that are so unusual that they seem to be the work of fiction.…

Hardcover. Condition: New. A New Light takes us on a journey through present-day Afghanistan, documented using an age-old photographic method, a box camera (kamra-e-faoree) that functions both as camera and darkroom. Two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Rodrigo Abd brings this apparatus back to a country where it was once widely used, encountering the citizens of today's Afghanistan through a slow and deeply personal photographic process. The resulting images are striking in their depth and darkness, at once intimate and revealing. Carrying the nearly 15-kilogram camera across the country, Rodrigo set up temporary portrait studios in urban and rural settings alike, from factories and workshops to parks, streets, and places of leisure. The physicality and slowness of the process creates encounters that feel deliberate and grounded, offering a rare form of presence. Accompanied by short interviews and descriptive captions, the photographs open a layered view into everyday life in Afghanistan today. Rodrigo Abd has spent decades documenting conflict, political upheaval, and social realities across the world. He first encountered the kamra-e-faoree during his early assignments in Afghanistan in the 2000s, where he began experimenting locally with the instant box camera and produced an initial body of work. This return to Afghanistan reflects both a commitment to his craft and a deeper engagement with the country and its people, reconnecting photographic history with contemporary lived experience. 9 x 14cm 156 Pages Slipcase Text English / Persian Forward by Lukas Birk.…

Hardcover. Condition: New. 338 pages : illustrations, Wood Cover with screen print. 'Box Camera NOW offers a unique insight into a new generation of Box Camera photographers working on the street and studios with primarily homemade cameras. These rudimentary tools follow a history of street photographers who worked around the globe in parks and on street corners, creating cheap memorabilia and first-time photographic experiences for the masses. These Box Cameras have many names in different languages Afghan Box Camera, Street Box, Camera Minuteros, Lambe Lambe, Cuban Polaroid, Instant Box, Minuite Camera, Kamra-e-faoree, Ruh Khitch, Foto Agüita etc. The concept is always the same: The camera, mostly home made, is used as an instant camera on the street or in parks to take pictures of clients passing bye. The box is camera and dark room at the same time and uses photographic paper as negative and positive. The photographic history books have largely forgotten these type of photographers as it was the image of the poor and often considered as "cheap" photography by studio owners. Likely by historians as the cameras are individually made and do not follow any form of consecutive construction. Box Camera NOW encompasses 54 photographers from 21 countries around the globe. Each photographer with is own style and adaptation of Box Camera photography. Each one with his own unique ability to turn light and sensitive paper into a memorable object. With images by: Adrien Tache, Alain Paris, Aurélien de Saint André, Barbara Ghidini, Benoit Capponi, Cássia Xavier & Gustavo Falqueiro, Charlotte Guey, Chen Zi Wua, Clément Marion, Conrado Pinamonti, Low CQ, Damien Gautier, Daniel Robinson, Diogo Baptista, Ferdows Faghir, Flo Gales, George Papageorgiou, Gianni De Gregorio, Guillaume Koessler, Hans Zeeldieb, Irwandi, M. According to publisher, hand-made, printed and bound in the MPA workshop in Yangon. Edition of 600. "Tattooing is deeply rooted in the cultural traditions of Myanmar. Prior to British colonization, it was common for men of the Bama, Shan, or Kayin to adorn their skin from the waist to below the knees with mythical or animal figures. A completed tattoo on both legs served as a visual expression of manhood and courage. Moreover, the tattoos showed their devotion to Buddhism and served as protection against evil forces. Men of all classes, from laymen to aristocrats, adopted the practice of leg tattooing. Suppressed by the colonial administration, the custom eventually ceased to exist by the mid-20th century. This book is a tribute to the last old men still bearing these traditional marks." -- publisher. Jens Uwe Parkitny (illustrator). …

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: New. 20x15cm / 54 Pages English & Chinese Introduction Hard cover with padding / Embossed. 'The book presents a record of unseen images from shaming ceremonies held during the Cultural Revolution in Chongqing, China. The prosecuted people depicted in the book were dissidents, intellectuals and opponents of the Communist Party who were publicly punished during the violent period of the late 1960s. Records like these are very rare and have not yet found their way into public discussions in China or internationally. As only official photographers were allowed to document these prosecutions, it is almost impossible to find such images in private albums. This led to the idea to collage the images with Chinese photo albums that were produced in the same period and were widely used by members of the public to keep their memories alive. These kind of albums are often beautifully illustrated with ideas of prosperity and the development of society. The images were given to me by an anonymous person in Chongqing, in 2015. We decided to publish the book with a very basic introduction to the time period in English and Chinese, hoping to provide space for interpreting the images further. Clearly, the Cultural Revolution is not the only violent period that is not found in private photo albums or is still actively suppressed from public discussions by governing powers. Post-World War I & II colonial atrocities, for example, are still hardly to be found in Western history books and very rarely talked about in public. This book is not about facts but rather offers an idea on how to bring impersonal images of violence into a personal space of discussion'. …

Soft cover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. Topography of Remembrance reframes the Second World War as a truly global conflict, one whose roots lie not in 1939, but in the Japanese invasion of Manchuria in 1931, and deeper still in centuries of colonial expansion, racial hierarchy and imperial rivalry. The war commonly remembered through European stories of the Holocaust, liberation and reconstruction was a catastrophe that touched every continent and reshaped the entire world. At the heart of the book are ten individual narratives. A Kenyan rifleman in Burma, a Filipina guerrilla, an Indian nurse in Italy, a West African infantryman in France, an African American GI in Europe, a Jewish resistance fighter in North Africa - their stories bring the war's global scale to life, illustrated with maps, photographs and propaganda material of the time. The book makes a clear argument: the genocide and fanaticism of the Second World War were the culmination of a long tradition of colonial violence. Only the war's catastrophic scale made a return to colonial normality impossible, giving rise to decolonisation and fragile new ideas about human rights. Topography of Remembrance is an invitation to step beyond national frames and towards a shared, human understanding of history. As the Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel said, without memory there is no culture, no civilisation, no society and no future.…
