Illustrated Portraits on plates. 246 pages clean and tight. The eight biographical essays that are included in the volume originally appeared as introductions to a series of reprints, entitled "'Classical County Histories", issued by EP Publishing Ltd. in 1 97 1 -6. They are reproduced here with a few minor corrections, but without substantial alteration or enlargement. The General Editor of the series, Professor Jack Simmons of the University of Leicester, has prefixed to them a brief introduction which surveys the development of the writing of county history from its origins in the sixteenth century down to our own time. The essays are on Robert Thoroton, James Wright, Sir Robert Atkyns, William Borlase, John Hutchins, Joseph Nicolson and Richard Burn, Edward Hasted, and Sir Richard Worsley and are printed in chronological order in which the books were originally published, from 1677 to 1781. A further volume is planned, to include those on later writers. Size: 8vo.

Of all the battles that have taken place throughout history perhaps those which have occurred at sea have been the most impressive and exciting, but this book has not been written purely for the tension it generates. The author has endeavoured to show the connecting principles of sea-fighting through the Galley Age, the Sailing-Ship Age and the period of steamships. His aim has been to present a clear picture of the intentions of successive admirals, indicating how tactics were modified by the progress of time, or remained almost unaltered. There are twelve battles mentioned in this book, and they show the motives running through European naval minds from the earliest times until the First World War. For each battle, the author indicates the political factors which brought about the war, the characters of the opposing Commanders-in Chief, and the nature both of their problems and their fleets. Consequently it is possible to compare the battles at such places as Actium and Trafalgar. The naval historian will find this book of particular value in that it describes, from an independent viewpoint, sea battles which in many instances proved vital to the outcome of the hostilities. Size: 8vo.
