Cavafis ejercieron en dos escritores de habla inglesa, E. M. Forster y Lawrence Durrell. Las guerras mundiales trajeron a ambos novelistas a Alejandría; una vez allí, los dos se familiarizaron con la ciudad escribiendo sobre su historia y su entorno. También se ocuparon del legendario Cavafis, tratando cada uno de conseguir lo que él ya había logrado: captar la esencia de un extraordinario lugar.A fin de comprender de qué manera Alejandría y su poeta influyeron en estos dos autores ingleses, Jane Lagoudis Pinchin analiza en primer lugar la historia y el paisaje de la ciudad.
