Paperback. Condition: Fair. Soldier, nurse and spy for the Republic This is an extraordinary book by any standards and no short description of it could possibly do justice to its author or her book. Sarah Edmonds was a lady from the northern states of America who, when the great Civil War broke out between the Union and the Confederacy, decided that being 'one who waits' was definitely not her style. Disguised as a man-a talent she had developed since childhood-she successfully enlisted in the 2nd Michigan Regiment and served in several campaigns including the battles at Bull Run, Antietam and Fredericksburg, without ever revealing her gender. In common with many women, from both sides of the conflict, she later performed with distinction as a nurse to wounded troops in the field. Though this was noteworthy and frequently dangerous work it was insufficient for Sarah both as a contribution to the Union war effort and for her own spirit of adventure, so she embarked on a career in the Union Army Secret Service as a spy. This dangerous occupation, where the penalty for detection and capture was summary execution, propelled her into many perilous adventures behind enemy lines, often disguised as a man in a variety of personas including Confederate soldier, negro labourer and Irish tinker. Sarah Edmonds' story is an absolutely gripping personal account of an exceptional woman's experience of war which will fascinate anyone interested in the Civil War and dauntless women in particular. Available in softcover and hard back with dust jacket.…

Smalley discovered the map portion of the U.S. Department of the Interior's The Lewis and Clark Trail, A Proposal for Development, United States Department of the Interior, 1965. These maps had been sent to Congress documenting the Lewis and Clark Trail in preparation for designating it a Historic Trail. They included documentation of over 400 Lewis and Clark campsite locations as well as existing and proposed landmarks along the trail from St. Louis to the Pacific and back again. The National Park Service has the only other set of these maps known to exist.Smalley condensed The Original Journals of Lewis and Clark by Reuben Gold Thwaites (1904-05) and produced a moving daily story that the layman will appreciate. Read the events of each day's travels and see them unfold on these historic maps. Follow the daily progress and visually experience the toil as the Corp slowly makes its way into history. Paperback. Condition: Good. Taken captive at the early age of thirteen by Seneca Indians, Mary Jemison was trained in the wilderness to the ordinary duties of the Indian female. Embedded with the sentiments and lifestyle of the Seneca's she essentially transformed into a member of the tribe. Mary Jemison's story is a remarkable one not because of her extraordinary lifestyle, but because this was the lifestyle that, in the end, she chose for herself. When prisoners were being set free from the bondage of the Indians after the French and Indian War, Mrs. Jemison chose to remain with her Indian friends and accept her Seneca upbringing. Known for her uncommon generosity, as Westward Expansion began to flourish, those who settled near the Genesee River soon became acquainted with The White Woman. This is not a facsimile but is a quality retype set addition. It is illustrated and contains a Appendix with Indian Geographical Names of the area.…

Hardback. Condition: Good. This DSI edition contains all 3 Volumes in one binding. The type was reset for a clean look and appearance. The object of this work is to deal with Mr. Lincoln individually and domestically: as lawyer, as citizen, as statesman. Special attention is given to the history of his youth and early manhood, and while dwelling on this portion of his life the liberty is taken to insert many things that would be omitted or suppressed in other places. The endeavor is to keep Lincoln in sight all the time, to cling close to his side all the way through - leaving to others the more comprehensive task of writing a history of his times. I have no theory of his life to establish or destroy. Mr. Lincoln was my warm devoted friend. - William H. Herndon Springfield, Illinois, 1888 This Edition contains the following Appendix and A Full Index APENDIX. Unpublished Family Letters 613 An Incident on the Circuit 619 Lincoln's Fellow Lawyers 620 The Truce with Douglas. - Testimony of Irwin 621 The Bloomington Convention. 621 An Office Discussion. - Lincoln's Idea of War 622 Lincoln and the Know-Nothings 623 Lincoln's Views on the Rights of Suffrage 625 The Burial of the Assassin Booth 625 A Tribute to Lincoln by a Colleague at the Bar 626 INDEX 629.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. A classic account of the Civil War from a Union Army Infantry officer In 1861 John Beatty raised a company of Ohio Volunteers to take their part in the great conflict between the states. From this time, as an officer of the 3rd Ohio Volunteer regiment he faithfully kept an almost daily journal of life in a Union Infantry regiment. As the campaign in West Virginia began Beatty recorded the events of army life on the march, around the campfire, on picquet duty and in clashes with the Confederate enemy. He has a fine sense of humour and his anecdotes of dialogue involving soldiers, former slaves, his brother officers and their 'rebel' prisoners elevate his text from the run of the mill military memoir. Battlefield accounts are equally graphically drawn including Perryville which he experienced as a regimental officer. Promoted to Brigadier General of Volunteers in 1862, Beatty commanded a brigade at Stone River, Tuilahoma and Chickamauga. Another brigade appointment saw him in action at Chattanooga and Knoxville.
