Susan Loy has compiled a unique American floral dictionary based on the historic language of flowers. The dictionary includes a vocabulary of 1,400 flowers with their associated sentiments as well as 1,500 sentiments with their associated flowers. The tradition of associating flowers with sentiments or virtues is ancient and universal. It was formalized in Victorian England, France, and America with the publication of books containing a dictionary of flowers with their corresponding meanings. In the language of flowers, the red rose means love while the lily of the valley signifies the return of happiness. Every flower symbolizes a trait drawn from life and nature. This book grew out of the Susan Loy's use of this tradition to create a series of Literary Calligraphy® watercolor paintings called "The Language of Flowers Series." The book includes twenty~eight color reproductions of these exquisitely detailed paintings, which contain a total of 139 individual flower drawings. Each painting incorporates hand~lettered poems or texts expressing meanings related to love, nature, peace, serenity, friendship, and many more. Flowers, the Angels' Alphabet will be of interest to gardeners and flower lovers wanting to know the meanings of the flowers around them. The comprehensive dictionary listings and extensive cross references will delight artists, designers, florists, gardeners, writers, and anyone who appreciates a lovely flower.…

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Volume 3The Language of Flowers Encyclopedia is a three-volume illustrated history of the books, authors, and meanings of 2,870 flowers, herbs, trees, and emojis. Rooted in folklore, mythology, literature, history, and the physical characteristics of plants, the language of flowers is a rich literary tradition of associating flowers with symbolic meanings. Spanning ancient times to the present, with special emphasis on nineteenth-century language of flowers books, this encyclopedia draws on 317 references and the author's forty years of experience as a writer and creator of Literary Calligraphy(R) artwork. A work of remarkable breadth and beauty, The Language of Flowers Encyclopedia is a landmark work in the field, a uniquely illustrated and unparalleled reference for book collectors, botanists, historians, and flower lovers.Volume 3 presents a comprehensive botanical dictionary drawn from 38 language of flowers books from the earliest nineteenth-century French dictionaries and those published in England and North America. This dictionary addresses the ambiguity of common flower names by grouping flowers under their prevailing common name, identifying alternate names, providing cross-references, and, most importantly, supplying the botanical name as identified in nineteenth-century language of flowers books. For example, the Autumn Crocus (Colchicum autumnale) carries 12 different sentiments, and each is cross-referenced to a particular historical source. This dictionary is an invaluable tool for tracing the chronological evolution of flower associations, assessing consensus on particular meanings, and understanding nuances in the flower language.Volume 3 also updates the language of flowers for the modern era by adding plant emojis and flowers not included in Victorian dictionaries. It catalogues 79 flower and plant emojis recognized by the Unicode Consortium, providing an image, date of adoption, popularity ranking, Unicode sentiment, and meanings drawn from crowdsourced and curated emoji dictionaries and blogs. A final section lists twenty new additions to the language of flowers, including flowers not found in Victorian dictionaries, such as florist flowers and exotic species unknown to earlier writers. The new additions and emojis extend this centuries-old tradition into the present day. From the earliest French dictionaries to the latest Unicode emojis, Volume 3 bridges past and present.…
