Add to basket8vo in fours, pp. xxxii, 359, 362-464; text continuous despite the jump at p. 359 (see below); some waterstains on title and first few leaves, and also at end; contemporary half calf, a little worn, but sound. First and only edition: this collection appears to have been published at Rack's own risk, and is preceded by a substantial subscription list. Amongst the subscribers are many Norfolk gentry and nobility (Walpoles and Townshends among them), and agricultural reformers such as Arthur Young. Edmund Rack (c. 1735-87) was from a Quaker weaving family of Norfolk, but took an interest in literature, agriculture and other subjects, and contributed to magazines under the name of Eusebius. In the mid-1770s he settled in Bath and some of his later works were on agricultural reform; he also made topographical collections for the history of Somerset. The poems here include 'The Banks of the Avon' (written in 1779: pp. 79-82), ' The Cell of Contemplation' (1770: pp. 216-224), 'The Temple of Fancy' (pp. 377-390), and odes to Melancholy, to Spring and other subjects. In Bath, he helped to found the Bath Philosophical Society. The jump in pagination at p. 359 must be deliberate, and arises from the cancellation of leaves 2Z4 and 3A1, with a single leaf substituted in their stead. This is not noticed by ESTC, and is perhaps not present in all copies. …

Add to basketTwo volumes, small 8vo, pp. [ii], x, 188; [vi], [5]-236; first title with stain in inner margin, and some spotting, most notably at beginning and end; bound in contemporary tree calf, but since rebacked and recornered in a different style, with new marbled endpapers, preserving earlier bookplates (see below). First British edition: this text was first published in Philadelphia by Robert Bell, in 1774, as Observations on a variety of subjects. It is by Jacob Duché (1737-98), son of a mayor of Philadelphia and an Anglican clergyman. He was an early supporter of the move to independence, and in July 1776 he was chosen as the first chaplain to Congress. However, the following year he was captured by the British and became a turncoat; he fled to England, not returning to America until 1792. This edition was edited by Edmund Rack (d. 1787), who added the appendix on William Penn, which in fact takes up half of the second volume. Provenance. Contemporary bookplates of Sir William Maynard Gomm (1784-1875), soldier in the Napoleonic Wars, and later in various parts of the expanding British Empire. Gomm's first wife was Sophia Penn, great-granddaughter of William Penn, and so he would have had a family interest in the book.…

Carver penetrated further West than any other pre-Revolutionary explorer in his search for a Northwest Passage, mapping several tributaries of the Mississippi, and making many observations of flora and fauna, Indian tribes, etc., which were to prove useful to later explorers. His frontier experiences in Minnesota and Wisconsin have, according to Vail, "been accepted as one of the earliest and best accounts of pioneer days in this region."
