Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Famed for its industriousness and its urge to conquer, this race practises farming and uses chemical weapons. Humans? No, ants! Joachim Offenberg, a myrmecophile researcher at Aarhus University, shares fascinating facts about these tiny creatures so stealthy and stalwart they even endured a…ruthless onslaught from his Uncle Preben, who thinks these cannibals, slave drivers and infiltrators of our homes and gardens deserve no better. But why not domesticate ants and join forces with one fourth of the planet s animal biomass? Prepare to befriend a formidable foe. Journey into a microcosm where ants wage chemical warfare and farm with determined precision. Their reputation as cannibals and slave drivers clashes with the possibility of forging unexpected alliances, challenging our preconceptions about these tiny warriors and their resilient, hidden empires. These two factors contribute to a fuller and richer life. Bjornskov ends by discussing to what extent these elements can be exported to other parts of the world. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. What do we mean when we say "the people"? In a Nordic context, the word "people" was historically associated not with members of a sovereign nation but of a household, church, or state. The term remains a battlefield of mixed or even opposing interests and has developed at least three differ…ent meanings: a political unit, a cultural entity, and a social multitude. Modern historian Ove Korsgaard focuses on the crucial struggles over who has (or has not) belonged to the people over the past 175 years, and elucidates their implications for state and nation building in Denmark and other Nordic countries. In a Nordic context, ""the people"" transcends a single definition, representing a household, church, state, or social multitude. Over 175 years, conflicts over inclusion and identity have influenced power struggles and nation-building, revealing how evolving meanings shape cultural, political, and social landscapes in Nordic countries. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This volume introduces an international readership to the role books have played in the lives and upbringing of young people in the Nordic countries from the 1750s until today. Charlotte Appel and Nina Christensen look beyond an overview of noteworthy texts and characters to address the regi…ons distinctive reading cultures and the interactions between literature and changing views of childhood, with a special focus on Denmark. The emergence of a dedicated market for childrens books in the Global North coincided with national school reforms, when Luthers Small Catechism started to be supplementedor replacedby new books published for and about young readers, learners, and citizens. Childrens use of books and media is closely related to adults wishes to influence the present and future of a child through instruction, entertainment, or play. Chapters point to strong continuities as well as remarkable changes in the relationships between child readers and adult authors, artists, publishers, teachers, librarians, and parents through the centuries.Focusing on children as the central users and producers of texts, this interdisciplinary and transnational history shows how childrens exposure to and use of media impacted the Nordic welfare state, and vice versa. The ways adults facilitatedand in some cases preventedaccess to picture books, schoolbooks, textbooks, comics, magazines, and other media to youth between infancy and adolescence reveals the complicated interplay between childrens internal wishes and grown-ups external expectations over time. As narratives for young audiences are continuously rewritten, republished, and adapted into new forms, this pithy synthesis brings forward new knowledge about the material and social history of books, literature, and childhood. Over 250 years, Nordic childrens literature evolved as media forms, childhood ideals, and social institutions reshaped how stories reached young minds. The study examines Danish reading cultures by linking child experiences, influential figures, and translations to reveal historys imprint on youthful storytelling. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Rising inequality is one of the most prominent characteristics of the modern age of globalized economies. To some observers, inequality is a natural consequence of economic growth that ought to be accepted to ensure a prosperous future. To others, rising inequality is a cause for alarmnot ju…st because it is unfair, but also because, as Pope Francis has said, inequality is the root of social evil.By most measures, the Nordic countries consistently rank among the best not only when it comes to equality, but also when it comes to business friendliness. Political scientist Carsten Jensen delves into what is exceptional about equality in the region, and outlines the four equalities that set it apart: economic (the distance between the poor and rich is relatively low), inter-generational (success in life is not dependent on the status of ones parents), gender (women are highly integrated into the labor market and independent from the family), and health (the poor have access to the same medical treatments as the well-off).All four types of equalities have their origins in unique political settlements made in the 20th century. The resulting special social market economies of these countries affect their growth and levels of equality even today. Discusses how other countries can emulate the successes seen in the Nordic world. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The Nordic model rests on two pillars: the social safety net and the provision of services like education, childcare, and healthcare for all. It can also be characterized as an employment model, since its financial viability depends upon a high labor participation rate with very few working…poor.Economist Torben M. Andersen lays out the models structure and highlights factors important for understanding its economic performance. He then looks into specific policy areas based on Denmarks experiences and addresses the challenges arising from new technologies and globalization. Explores how the Nordic countries have managed to achieve such favourable economic performance. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This book examines the model developed in the Nordic countries for handling labor market relations between employers and employees - a model that has secured flexible and well-functioning labor market relations with comparatively high remuneration in case of sickness or unemployment. Consens…ual - and comparatively efficient - policies have likewise been pursued in agricultural and industrial policies, in environmental policies, and in many policies related to public services. The preconditions for these policies are strong civil societies, i.e. strong capacities for collective mobilization and collective action among groups, relatively strong unitary states, and high levels of generalised trust. The institutional apparatus of these consensual policies has been labelled corporatism. Nordic corporatism has implied consent to a norm of affected interests. Groups that are supposedly affected by state policies have access to the processes leading up to political decision-making, and are involved in the implementation of policies. This access has often public commissions or committees charged with preparing political decisions and delivering advice, as well as policy implementation committees. How the Nordic model mediates disputes between workers, businesses, and the state. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Urban planning is a keystone in the materialization of the Nordic welfare states. That is not to say that there is one particular city form or planning practice that is synonymous with the emerging welfare city, as welfare per se is far from normative. On the contrary, welfare is a highly am…biguous and contested notion that has changed over the postwar decades, which is also reflected in the development of the welfare city. However, welfare in urban planning has mainly been associated with ideas of the good life and egalitarianism. In a Nordic context, the state has taken the lead in providing the social engineering hardware for advancing this universal aim. Social demographic welfare is economically based on full employment, and in this regard housing and caregiving support are key components. Yet education, infrastructure, and leisure facilities are also basic features in the distribution of universal welfare services for citizens entire lives. The results, ideally, are green and spacious welfare cities. This book outlines the origins, development, challenges, and lived realities of the changing welfare city, focusing primarily on Denmark. Strategies have changed over the decades as models of development have shifted and as the needs of society and a warming planet have come into focus. The current welfare city can be described as an urban landscape characterized by, on the one hand, a division of functions and, on the other, mutual competition. The role of the state has been minimized, turning municipalities into the new major agents in attracting taxpayers and providing goodsboth by means of urban planning. Urban planning defined the rise of Nordic welfare states, characterized by distinctly zoned, open post-war cities. Changing societal demands and climate concerns have since transformed these spaces into dynamic, multifaceted environments that reveal a rich history of architectural evolution and everyday lived realities. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The Scandinavian countries (Denmark, Norway, and Sweden) enjoy some of the happiest populations and highest standards of living in the world, thanks in part to stable, democratic systems of government. Here, David Delfs Erbo Andersen presents a syncretic history of political and socioeconomi…c developments in the three Scandinavian countries since the early modern period, and contrasts their peaceful transitions with the more dramatic histories of otherwise similar European countries, like France and Germany. Unlike these and many other countriesthe United States among themScandinavias transition to democracy from monarchy was not marked by major violent upheavals or extreme political antagonism. Rather, Scandinavias peaceful process of democratization owed itself to the development of a penetrative bureaucracy in the early modern period and the activism of cooperative associations, first of farmers in the early nineteenth century and then of industrialized workers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Thanks to the gradual, relatively consensual adoption of political reforms and social norms, the history of Nordic democratic exceptionalism today helps account for the ongoing stability of the Scandinavian countries. Here, David Delfs Erbo Andersen presents a syncretic history of political and socioeconomic developments in the three Scandinavian countries since the early modern period, and contrasts their peaceful transitions with the more dramatic histories of otherwise similar European countries, like France and Germany. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This book concerns the chronology of Roman mythological sarcophagi. The traditional chronology assumes a peak in production during the reign of Gallienus (AD 259-268) that fades away in the reign of Constantine. This chronology has some obvious flaws. The supposed peak under the reign of Gall…ienus, when the empire was falling apart, can only be described as a mirage. Some very fine sarcophagi were indeed produced in this period, but the number is very limited. With the reign of Constantine (AD 306-337) came wealth, and the so-called villa boom that also revived sculpture in the round. At that time, it is believed that production of pagan sarcophagi had ceased to be replaced by Christian sarcophagi. This raises a very simple question, however: how were pagans buried? No doubt production of pagan sarcophagi continued beyond the turn of the century and Symmachus, who died in AD 402, was buried in such a sarcophagus. This book concerns the chronology of Roman mythological sarcophagi. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
