The four Peisley girls (Nellie, Clare, Millie, Kath) spent their early childhood years in Nyngan, country New South Wales, until they were separated and had to live in pain and poverty. Nellie, the eldest, brings them all together in the end. The book is packed with historical detail including their early country life, childhood anecdotes to heart-rending descriptions of Depression-era Sydney in the 1930s (Enmore).
