The subject matter is thus familiar; the network of friends, relatives and work mates; the visiting, bargaining, gossiping and manoeuvring that goes on between them; the impact of promotion, religion and conflict on social relations; and the operation of neighbourhood and workplace cliques and factions. The author argues that these familiar situations and processes have not received the scientific attention they deserve because of the prevailing bias in sociological theory. This bias derives partly from the colonial past and partly from entrenched power structures in universities.
