L?action se déroule en 1867 en Allemagne dans une famille aristocrate qui ne peut avoir d?enfant. L?intervention d'un biologiste permet au couple d?enfanter, grâce à la génération artificielle. Le livre fut encouragé par Georges Barral, fouriériste, ami et élève du professeur Claude Bernard (à qui est dédicacé le roman). Les auteurs, YvelingRambaud, nom de plume de GilbertFréderic, était journaliste auFigaro, romancier et auteur d?une vingtaine de textes et de comédies, et Jean-LouisDubutdeLaforest, journaliste et écrivain de romans de m?urs.
