Young, Reverend Edward (c. 3 July 1683 - 5 April 1765 was an English poet) William Treves (1812-1867), an upholsterer, of a family of Dorset yeomen, and father of Sir Frederick Treves (15 February 1853 - 7 December 1923) a prominent British surgeon, and an expert in anatomy. Treves was renowned for his surgical treatment of appendicitis, and is credited with saving the life of King Edward VII in 1902. He is also widely known for his friendship with Joseph Merrick, dubbed the 'Elephant Man' for his severe deformities. [Rev. Nathaniel Thornbury LL.B. New edition hard back binding in contemporary full tan calf covered boards, the spine divided into six panels, gilt and burgundy morocco lettering label in the second, gilt tools to the others, front and back parallel twin gilt lines to the perimeters. 18mo. 6½'' x 4¼''. A series of philosophical writings in blank verse, reflect…ing the author's state of mind following several bereavements, it was one of the most popular poems of the century, influencing Goethe and Edmund Burke. Contains frontispiece engraving, A2, [blank], 315 pp + 3 pp publisher's listings. Engraving is printed to the verso of the first leaf, rear end paper absent, staining from the leather turn-in's front and back. This volume, along with other books of the period, came from the family estate of Sir Frederick Treves, SIGNED by his father William Treves to the front free end paper 'William Treves - Dorchester', green heraldic bookplate of Reverend Nathaniel Thornbury, Avening, Gloucestershire to the front paste down.
