The Complaint: or, Night-Thoughts on Life, Death, & Immortality, better known simply as Night-Thoughts, is a long poem by Edward Young published in nine parts (or "nights") between 1742 and 1745. The poem is written in blank verse. It describes the poet's musings on death over a series of nine "nights" in which he ponders the loss of his wife and friends, and laments human frailties. The best-known line in the poem is the adage "procrastination is the thief of time", which is part of a passage in which the poet discusses how quickly life and opportunities can slip away. …

Edward Young's "Night Thoughts" is a profound work of 18th-century English poetry, a lengthy blank verse poem that meditates on death, immortality, and faith. Composed in nine "Nights," it presents a deeply personal and often melancholic reflection on human existence, loss, and the solace found in Christian belief. The poem chronicles the speaker's journey through grief and despair, ultimately arriving at a hopeful contemplation of the afterlife. It is a significant piece of pre-Romantic literature, offering insights into the philosophical and religious concerns of the era. This classic work will appeal to readers interested in historical poetry, theological discourse, and the development of English literary thought. Hardback. …

Revised and collated with the early quarto editions, third edition of this revision. Illustrated with a frontispiece and four plates. Collated complete. Inspired by the successive deaths of his stepdaughter, her husband, and then Young's own wife, the dramatic monologue laments human frailties and describes the Young's musings over death. The adage, 'procrastination is the thief of time' originates from Young's poem in a passage which discusses how quickly opportunities can slip away. Add to baskethardcover. Condition: Good. Publication: London, Nuttall, Fisher, and Dixon, n.d. [c. 1800â"1815] Formatting: 8vo, pagination unverified, untrimmed text block. Condition Report: Good. The volume has been sensibly but plainly rebound in grey-blue paper over boards, presenting a tight, secure structure devoid of external embellishment. The text block remains entirely untrimmed, preserving its original rough-cut edges which display expected age-toning and moderate dust-soiling. Internally, the binding holds firm, though the preliminary leaves, including the frontispiece and title page, exhibit significant damp staining and prominent tide marks primarily localised to the lower gutter and margins. Intermittent foxing and scattered spotting are present throughout the text block, commensurate with the paper stock and provincial production of this era, yet the structural integrity remains uncompromised and the text is fully legible. Catalogue Note: This "Stereotype Edition" compiles Edward Youngâs profoundly influential blank-verse meditation alongside Robert Blairâs The Grave and supplementary verses, effectively gathering the period's most popular "Graveyard School" poetry into a single, accessible volume. The text is accompanied by an engraved frontispiece portrait of Young and several internal engraved plates executed by notable period craftsmen (including Neagle, Cooke, and J. Palmer), representing a solid example of nineteenth-century provincial illustration. The copy bears modest but interesting provenance markers, including early ownership signatures ("J. Burman" and what appears to be "John Forster") on the preliminary leaves. Having been rebound functionally in plain paper boards, the book stands as an authentic, unsophisticated survival of a heavily read printing. Such stereotyped editions, while historically printed in enormous numbers to satisfy the sweeping middle-class appetite for pietistic literature, are surprisingly scarce on the open market today in any condition, as they were overwhelmingly read to pieces rather than preserved in formal libraries. A quintessential cornerstone of the eighteenth-century "Graveyard School" of poetry, Edward Young's Night Thoughts was a spectacular literary success that defined the mood of Christian melancholia for generations. Written in profound grief following a succession of personal losses, this expansive blank-verse epic explores the transient nature of life, the inevitability of death, and the hope of immortality. This compilation also features Robert Blair's similarly influential poem The Grave, alongside other contemporary elegiac works, offering a comprehensive immersion into the era's fascination with mortality, mourning, and spiritual redemption. W.M. Craig; Cooke; Neagle; J. Palmer; J. James; J. Dudley; J. Taylor (illustrator).…
