Some pencil marks and highlighting. Inscribed on fep by George Lichter. There are 10 references in the index to George Lichter. Yonay helped make the T…op Gun school at Miramar Naval Air Station famous. A journalist and a student of the military, he had written an article about the Top Gunners for California Magazine. In turn, the magazine article was read by Hollywood producers, who used it as the basis for the movie starring Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis. After writing the magazine piece, he went back to Israel where he researched and wrote another impactful military-themed book, No Margin for Error: the Making of the Israeli Air Force. George Lichter flew P-47C/Ds and P-51Ds with the USAAF's 374th Fighter Squadron From November 1943 to just before the Battle of the Bulge, December 1944. On Dec. 23, Lichter and others left for Israel. Lichter spent the rest of the war in Israel. The Air Force assigned Lichter to 101 Squadron, under the command of Ezer Weizman. later IAF HQ transferred him to Ekron to become the chief test pilot there. His next assignment was to head the IAF's advanced flying school. Derived from a Kirkus review: An exciting, suspenseful history of the Israeli Air Force. Investigative reporter Yonay re-creates the travails and triumphs of the IAF through a skillful interweaving of interviews with scores of airmen and government leaders, official archives, published memoirs and articles, and private diaries. When Jordanian and Egyptian forces invaded Israel in 1948, the just-born nation's air power consisted of only a handful of secondhand WW II light aircraft and a small international group of volunteer flyers. The pilots were top-notch, but they were also undisciplined. Chief among the hell-raisers was Ezer Weizman, in later years head of the IAF; balancing his influence was that of serious airmen like Aharon Remez, operations chief of the Haganah Air Service, who sought to mold a sober air force like that of other countries. The attack-oriented IAF believed in striking enemy installations and concentrations behind the lines. Unshackled in the Six-Day War, the IAF's destruction of the bulk of Egypt's air force on the tarmac enabled the ground forces to win their epic victories. A well-researched, valuable contribution to military/Judaic history. First Edition [stated], presumed first printing. Eric Elias (Maps) and Dubi Tal (Jacket Photograph) (illustrator).

Add to basketHardcover with dust jacket. The story begins with a ragtag band of daredevil World War II pilots - idealists, adventurers, and mercenaries - who came from America and other countries to fly a handful of old surplus planes in a war against the enemies of the newly created State of Israel. Barely twenty years later, an armada of M…irages, Mysteres, and Meteors streaked out of the Mediterranean sky to destroy the entire Egyptian Air Force on the ground, winning the 1967 War in three hours. How a group of extraordinary men forged one of the worlds most sophisticated air forces, which more than once saved the day for its beleaguered country, is the story Ehud Yonay tells in No Margin for Error. It is a story dominated by the legendary Ezer Weizman, the lanky, six-foot-tall scion of one of Israels first families, a brawling, hard-drinking womanizer whose dash and flamboyance made him into a mythological figure who inspired total devotion in his pilots. It is also the story of men like Palestine-born Aharon Remez, who talked David Ben-Gurion into set-ting up an Underground air force even before Israel came into existence; of Menahem Bar, the wiry son of Israeli farmers, who brought the swashbuckling pilots from gunslinging anarchy to battle readiness; of the dapper Don Tolkowsky, who with his clipped Oxford accent set forth a new military doctrine that Yak Nevo - the "poet of the dogfight" - translated into a brilliant attack plan that was to bring a victory that astonished the world. No Margin for Error is an important and comprehensive military history with all the excitement of a high-tech adventure, in which a heroic group of youngsters are molded into highly skilled flyers able to coax their sleek fighting machines into outturning, outclimbing, and out-shooting the far more numerous enemy. Yonay tells a breathtaking tale of suspense that shifts from battlefield to forward command post. He takes the reader into the cockpit of a high-flying Mystere as the pilot rams forward his throttles and throws his plane into a steep climb to elude a pursuing MiG, and he is also present at chief-of-staff meetings at which Israels political and military leaders conduct their own personal battles under the stress of an impending war. This is a book of high adventure and page-turning drama, a saga to match the battle of Britain - one of the most exciting chapters in modern military history. 427 p. photos ex-library copy, good condition.
