The December 1982 issue (No. 12) of the English-language literary monthly Chinese Literature, first published in 1951 and edited at this time by Yang Xianyi (1915-2009), one of the foremost twentieth-century translators of Chinese literature into English. The centerpiece of the issue is the new short story "The Log Cabin Overgrown with Creepers" by the young Hunan writer Gu Hua, accompanied by his essay "How I Became a Writer." Other contents include selections from Liu E's late-Qing novel The Travels of Lao Can in Gladys Yang's translation, with an introductory essay by Yang Xianyi; early prose by Ba Jin; a survey of the Beijing Academy of Painting's twenty-fifth anniversary exhibition; an interview with the ci poetry scholar Tang Guizhang; three contemporary poems; an article on ancient Chinese bronze drums; reviews of new Chinese books; and the 1982 subject index. Nine pages of color plates reproduce contemporary Chinese painting; the cover painting is by Zhu Qizhan and the inside back cover by Wang Ailan. In Very Good condition. Pictorial wraps (cover image an ink-wash painting of three herons, "On the Riverbank" by Huang Yongyu) with mild shelf wear…, light bumping and creasing to the cover edges, and slight toning to the rear panel. Binding tight. Pages lightly toned with age but clean and unmarked. The August 1982 issue (No. 8) of the English-language literary monthly Chinese Literature, first published in 1951 and edited at this time by Yang Xianyi. The issue's most historically significant content is its rehabilitation of the "White Flowers" poets, members of the Hu Feng literary circle who were silenced and persecuted in the 1955 anti-Hu Feng campaign and only restored to print after the policy reversals of the late 1970s. Niu Han's introductory essay "Unwithered White Blossoms" is followed by twelve poems from A Long, Lu Li, Peng Yanjiao, Ji Fang, Zeng Zhuo, Du Gu, Lü Yuan, Lu Dian, Niu Han himself, and Hu Zheng. The issue also carries two new short stories ("Crimson Clouds" by the Guangdong writer Lü Lei, winner of the 1980 national best short-story award, and "Cripple Chen and Team Leader Qiu" by Jing Fu); Huang Yongyu's poems and paintings from a recent visit to Australia; coverage of the Seventh National Woodcut Exhibition; an article on a 1982 Beijing production of The Tempest directed by Tsai Chin, daughter of the Peking opera actor Zhou Xinfang; translations from the love poems of the Sixth Dalai Lama; and a feature on Shen Quan's 1759 painting "Twin Cranes." The cover painting is by Huang Yongyu and the inside back cover by Yang Mingyi. Contents: Crimson Clouds (Lü Lei); Cripple Chen and Team Leader Qiu (Jing Fu); The Seventh National Woodcut Exhibition (Song Yuanwen); British Watercolours and Drawings Exhibited in China (Chang Youming); Unwithered White Blossoms (Niu Han); Poems: Be Not Afraid (A Long), The Crimsoned Snow (Lu Li), The Shell (Lu Li), The Young Calf (Peng Yanjiao), Azaleas (Ji Fang), The Tree on the Edge of the Cliff (Zeng Zhuo), The Earth's Dream (Du Gu), When I Was Young (Lü Yuan), A Drop of Water in the Ocean (Lu Dian), Love (Niu Han), The Woman in White (Hu Zheng); Fables (Ning Xi); Impressions of Australia, Look!
