Hardcover. Condition: New. The origin and evolution of fantastic beings and animals, the vyala, have not been deeply studied by scholars so far. The meaning and purpose of these fantastic figures has been lost in a far distant past. Scholars have still different interpretations for the composite animals seen on the Indus Valley seals and the sculptures and statuettes of the early period in INDIA. Yet it is proved in this work, that there is a resemblance between composite animals of the Indus Valley and those discovered in archaeological excavations in the Gangetic Valley, some one thousand years later. The reasons for illustrating supernatural animals seen on early Buddhist monuments-Like Bharut, Sanchi or Amaravati - has not been as yet fully understood. It was therefore necessary to record systematically the composite animals from earliest time and classify them according to their types: terrestrial aquatic of celestial. With this classification, one can observe that these fantastic beings represent the three worlds. The rich amount of fantastic figures in Indian Museum has not attracted sufficient attention of visitors and scholars. On the other hand, some sites are very difficult to access. In the course of 20 years, Dr. ZHU has taken thousands of photographs. She visited more than a hundred sites, temples and monuments in different parts of India and she undertook a careful and methodical study of some twenty temples from the 7th to 13th century (subject of the next publication). In this very book, she presents har study from the Indus Valley civilization until the Gupta period, from 2500 B. C. to the 6th cent. A. C. particularly for the Buddhist period. She illustrates it with352 drawing. Among the 415 photographs, more were taken by herself. This study demonstrates the continuity of the concept of composite and fantastic animals. They are part of Life and art of this subcontinent. There were of course external influences, Greek and Persian. For example, on the theme of the vyala-yaksa. The author analysed their shape of indigenous origin and their transformation under foreign influence in the various sites of ancient India. The author explains the resemblance between the theme of the Tao Tie and the Kirttimukha, and between the Chinese Fuxi-Nuwa and the Indian naga-nagini, etc. Since natural, composite and fantastic animals are present on most pf the religious sculptures of India, this comprehensive work of Dr. Xintianzhu, will remain a landmark in the art history of India.…

First edition, and very rare (not in WorldCat), of this collection of the poetry and prose of Ren Huang (1683-1768), one of "the foremost lyrical poets" (Ko, p. 92, see below) of the Guangdong region and a member of the artistic circle whose center was Gu Erniang, a famous woman inkstone carver whose shop was located in Zhuanszhu Lane in the imperial city of Suzhou. This collectors and scholars of this circle were both patrons and clients of Gu Erniang and, in fact, Ren's main asset late in life was his collection of precious carved inkstones. Ren (1683-1768), whose literary name was Xintian (or Shentian) Ren, was a native of Yongful county in Fujian. Born into a well-educated family of generations of government officials, he learned poetry and painting as a child. He received the juren degree in 1702 and served as a county magistrate in Sihui in Guangdong province. Most of the poetry in this work is from manuscripts and appears here for the first time, whereas the essays and other prose writings were previously published. The second preface, dated 1754, is signed by Tingheng Xu, and the third preface, of 1756, is signed by Tiaoyuan Sang (1695-1771), scholar. A nice set, but with two leaves of text replaced in early manuscript. Several natural paper flaws not touching text and mended.
