Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Published: 1992. 1st Edition / 1st Impression. Not signed by author. Author's personal archive copy; with private photographic evidence within the published text. Unique historical archive of the British Empire, housed within the 1992 first impression of Robert Hepburn Wright's Then the Wind Changed in Africa. Identified by the initials 'RHW' and meticulously annotated in his own hand, this was the author's personal working volume, a one-of-a-kind photographic documentary of colonial life. Wright has transformed the printed word into a primary visual record by inserting thirty original, unpublished photographs onto the text. Each image is cross-referenced to the narrative, providing irrefutable forensic evidence of his 19361952 service as a District and Education Officer in Northern Nigeria and the RAF in Southern Rhodesia. This enhanced document captures the raw essence of the 'winds of change' through a private lens, offering an unparalleled insight of a continent in transition. Cross-referencing and "RHW" markings suggest first-hand authority and personal history of the author. PROVENANCE: Robert Hepburn Wrights personal working copy and photographic archive; subsequently acquired from the trade. DESCRIPTION: Green DJ over green cloth. Standard text illustrations accompanied by thirty one photographs which appear to document the book Robert Hepburn Wright's time in Nigeria. The photographs include images of Wright as supported by the official plates of Wright in the book [image 12 and 17] Language: English Book Condition: Near Fine. Very minor wear to corners, edges and spine ends. Clean sharp cloth. Tightly bound with intact endpapers and strong hinges. Pencil annotations to text margins [possibly from RHW] and a few pen references to the standard photographs referencing photos to sections of text. DJ Condition: Near Fine. Very light wear to upper and lower edges. Unclipped. Pages 127. Size: 22 cm by 14 cm. PROVENANCE BACKGROUND: Contains thirty original photographs physically pasted into the volume, each meticulously cross-referenced to specific page numbers aligning with Wrights documented service history (1936-1952). Robert Hepburn Wright (b 1913) started work as a cadet, Nigeria, 1936, as an assistant district officer, 1939 and assistant principal, Colonial Office (on secondment), 1942. He served as an administrative officer, Cyprus (on secondment), 1942-1943 and saw active service with the R. A. F. in Southern Rhodesia and Britain, 1943-1946. He took a post as assistant district officer, northern Nigeria, 1946, district officer, 1946 and education officer, northern Nigeria, 1948-1952. BOOK RESUME: This work presents a unique, first-hand pictorial and textual account of life in the British colonial service in Nigeria, capturing daily routines, social interactions, and administrative experiences. The photographs serve as a visual record of a historical period rarely documented in such detail, offering insight into both social and administrative history. Annotated margins potentially provide additional contextual commentary by Wright himself, making this both a literary and historical artefact. AUTHOR: Robert Hepburn Wright was a dedicated member of the British Colonial Service whose professional life spanned the critical decades of Nigerian development from 1936 to 1952. Beginning his tenure as a cadet in Northern Nigeria, he navigated the administrative complexities of the district before serving as an officer with the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. Upon his return to Africa, Wright transitioned into the role of Education Officer, positioning himself as a significant figure in the intellectual and social restructuring of the Northern Nigerian territories during the final years of British rule.
