XX [From the preface] We read and reread Deacon Wright's poetry because it makes us feel good and we have come to regard some of what he wrote as superior examples of light verse in English. Though we believe that Deacon wrote principally for the joy of writing, certainly not for posterity, we think it a service to his muse and to the SWT [Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, now Texas State University] tradition to try to preserve examples of his art. [From Appendix D, The San Marcos Years] Deacon came to the SWT faculty in 1925. He had studied at Westminster College and the University of Missouri and had taught in Missouri schools before coming to this appointment. He earned a doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin in 1939. He was the best classical scholar on the English faculty [of SWT] and probably, with the exception of E. O. Tanner, the best on the faculty at large. But his strong intellectual interests were blended with a zest for life and a commitment to a variety of activities. He assumed the office of chairman of the department of English in 1945. He left the faculty in 1954 because of a misinterpretation of his humorous letter sent anonymously to some women friends.
