Catalog of a retrospective exhibition at the Walt Disney Family Museum, San Francisco, California, 2013-2014. | "Tyrus Wong (born Wong Gen Yeo, 黃齊耀, in Taishan, Guangdong, 25 October 1910; died Sunland, Los Angeles, 30 December 2016, aged 106) was a Chinese-American painter, illustrator, and designer whose long life spanned nearly the whole history of Asian-American art in California. He came to the United States in 1920 with his father as a "paper son," entering under the assumed identity Look Tai Yow and enduring interrogation and detention at the Angel Island immigration station under the Chinese Exclusion Act; he did not become a citizen until 1946. A scholarship to the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles set him on his path (he graduated in 1930), and in the 1930s he painted murals for the Works Progress Administration (WPA), exhibited with the modernist Chinese-American circle around Chinatown, and designed greeting cards for Hallmark. His most consequential work came at Disney, which hired him as an "in-betweener" in 1938: his small, atmospheric pastel and watercolor sketches, drawn from Song-dynasty landscape painting, became the visual foundation of Bambi (1942), setting its misty, suggestive forest backgrounds, yet he was credited only as a "background" artist and was fired in the aftermath of the 1941 animators' strike. He then spent twenty-six years (1942-1968) as a production illustrator at Warner Bros., storyboarding and designing for films such as Rebel Without a Cause, The Wild Bunch, and Rio Bravo, while continuing to paint and to design ceramics and cards. In retirement he built and flew elaborate hand-painted kites of pandas, goldfish, centipedes, and dragons on the beach at Santa Monica, a practice that became his signature late work. Recognition came very late: Disney named him a Disney Legend in 2001, the Walt Disney Family Museum and the Museum of Chinese in America mounted retrospectives (2013-2015), Pamela Tom's documentary Tyrus (2015) told his story, and his death was marked by front-page obituaries that framed him as an artist whose achievement had been obscured for decades by anti-Chinese prejudice. || Contents: A beautiful simplicity -- An inspiration with many discoveries -- Beginnings -- A new style of painting -- The making of Bambi -- Art after Disney -- Work for Warner Brothers -- Making toys -- Big sky paintings -- Flying kites -- Inspiration -- Credits.;Water to Paper, Paint to Sky is the first comprehensive retrospective of America's oldest living artist Tyrus Wong, whose groundbreaking work on Walt Disney's classic animation film Bambi influenced a generation of leading animators, including John Lasseter, Pete Docter, and Don Hahn.
