Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 1st printing of the first American hardcover edition SIGNED by the late author on the front free end paper with a black ballpoint pen. No authorial inscription or markings by a previous owner. Lavender paper boards with gray cloth binding, black and gray titles and device on the spine and a reproduction of the author's signature on the front board. A tight copy that has been shelved on its spine to keep the text tight to the binding. The corners of the boards are sharp. There are two tiny and unobtrusive tea-colored stains to the text. One is visible at the top edge of the first blank preliminary page, the half-title page and ends on the next page. The other is at the top of the fore-edge. It becomes visible on the half-title page, gradually diminishing on the following pages until pg. 8 of the text. See photos. Small patch of rubbing to the bottom exposed pages at the fore-edge. The inside top edge (reverse side) of the back board is sunned for a length of one inch, next to the cloth binding. The price-clipped jacket is bright, crisp and the surface remains glossy. The white flaps have darkened. There are horizontal creases within the black border at the crown of the spine. Minor shelf wear to the surface of both panels. Despite the blemishes in condition, this is a very pleasing example of the first printing which is scarcely found flat-signed by the author with no markings by a PO. Buyer may be asked to pay the actual cost of postage due to the weight of the package. Signed by Author(s).

Dust Jacket Condition: dj. First Edition. [Science] FIRST UK EDITION. Octavo (23 x 15cm), pp.viii; 436; [2]. Publisher's black cloth lettered in gilt to spine, typographic dust jacket designed by Craig Dodd. Light spotting and toning to edges of textblock, rolling to crown of spine, jacket price clipped. Very good. Wolfe's book charts the lives of the astronauts working on post-war space travel, and thinks about the way in which these people, who were so controlled by the systems around them, managed to assert control over situations they found themselves in. Wolfe also thinks about the ways in which their personal lives were implicated, and portrays how their families were forced to suddenly become public figures.
