Analizzando, con tecniche raffinatissime, i fiochi puntini di luce o i deboli impulsi radio che ci pervengono dalle profondità dello spazio, gli astronomi hanno elaborato complesse teorie sull'origine e sull'età dell'universo, sulla sua evoluzione, sulla genesi e sul divenire delle stelle e delle galassie, sulla loro distanza, sull'origine della Terra e del sistema solare. Questo volume, realizzato da un gruppo di astronomi attivi in Francia, rappresenta qualche cosa di nuovo e di particolarmente interessante non solo per l'alto livello stilistico dell'esposizione, ma anche per la tecnica usata. Il lettore viene introdotto gradualmente alle scoperte e alle teorie più recenti, che non gli vengono presentate come spesso avviene alla stregua di intuizioni o scoperte meravigliose venute fuori dal nulla, ma come la conclusione di un processo che gli viene illustrato in tutti i suoi stadi precedenti.
