November 1983 in Berlin) war ein britischer Journalist und Schriftsteller. 1948 wurde er im Auftrag der KP Großbritanniens als Korrespondent in China tätig, wo er in der Endphase des chinesischen Bürgerkriegs die chinesische Volksbefreiungsarmee begleitete. Er war neben Wil(fred Graham) Burchett einer von zwei westlichen Korrespondenten, die von den Kommunisten im Koreakrieg akkreditiert wurden. Später setze er seine Arbeit als Kriegsberichtserstatter im Vietnamkrieg fort. Über Ostasien verfasste er mehrere Romane, darunter Der Himmel muss warten und Kopfjäger, die anthropologische Studie über Minderheiten in China ("Die Sklaven der Kühlen Berge"), sowie einen Reisebericht über Tibet. 1960 brach er mit Mao und den chinesischen Kommunisten, nachdem er schon 1958 wegen Großer Sprung nach vorn" und anderen Kampagnen, die er als Dummheiten" bezeichnete, als überzeugter Kommunist Abstand gewonnen hatte. Winnington, der fließend chinesisch sprach, verließ China mit seiner chinesisch-britisch(jüdisch)-stämmigen Frau und den gemeinsamen Kindern. Sie siedelte mit den Kindern nach Großbritannien über. Wegen Problemen mit der britischen Regierung verlegte er seinen Wohnsitz nach Ost-Berlin, der Hauptstadt der DDR, wo er 1963 eine neue Familie gründete (Heirat mit Ursula Wittbrodt, alias Ursula Winnington 1967). In der DDR war er als Korrespondent für den Morning Star tätig. Der Vietnamkrieg bot ihm aber immer wieder Gelegenheit, in den Fernen Osten zu reisen und auch in China journalistisch tätig zu werden.
