Signed by the author with dedication to front endpaper. Noticeable cracking to front hinge, front endpaper and frontispiece are slightly loose to top. Binding throughout remains firm. Pages are moderately tanned with mild foxing throughout. Minor red ink spots to front pastedown and endpaper. Occasional thumb-marking. Boards have moderate edge wear with corner bumping. Visible tanning to spine and edges with some crushing to spine ends. Gilt lettering is darkened. Small splits to spine ends; cloth is mildly frayed. Heavy water staining to all surfaces with visible markings. Cloth is slightly discoloured. Book is slightly bowed and forward leaning.…

A fascinating survey of the 48 most famous historical women of Kent. Contains 110 printed pages of text with portrait frontispiece and 8 other photo monochrome illustrations on silk art paper. Pages 12 and 13 only about the maids who are said to have been joined at both the shoulder and the hip, and to have lived for 34 years. It is claimed that on their death they bequeathed five plots of land to the village, known as the Bread and Cheese Lands. The income from these lands was used to pay for an annual dole of food and drink to the poor every Easter. Since at least 1775 the dole has included Biddenden cakes, hard biscuits imprinted with an image of two conjoined women.
