Staats came west for health reasons, became an early real estate salesman in Pasadena, then branched out to title insurance and investment opportunities, and became involved with many major Southern California businesses and civic institutions: Southern California Edison, Title Insurance and Trust Company, the Tournament of Roses, Throop College (which became CalTech), the Mt. Wilson railway and Lowe observatory, Union Oil, and so on. Basically in very good condition, but the dust jacket is gone, and someone has cut out the ffep with a knife, leaving only the paste-down half of the early photograph endpaper. A similar photograph from later years makes up the rear endpapers. Author's signature on the half-title page below the title.
