Decorative pastedowns, endpaper and page edges. Black and white frontispiece. Illustrated with an additional 9 black and white plates.…Previous owner's bookplate pasted onto front pastedown. Area of loss 2 cm by 4 cm to foot of spine. Title plate missing. Boards rubbed. Corner of fore edges of boards rubbed and lightly rubbed. Upper board and front endpaper loose. First 10 or so pages lightly tanned and lightly foxed. Frontispiece, tissue guard and title page would appear to be water stained. Overall, the book is in a poor condition (yet there are no missing pages).

Front hinge paper cracked & repaired, rear hinge fine. Brown endpapers. Vintage binder sticker on rear pastedown, 'Bound by Leighton Son and Hodge'. 212pp text plus a 48pp mini-book of other offerings by Chatto and Windus in rear. Good solid reading copy that displays OK on the shelf. Smith's wife arranged for this book to be written after his death, and only months before she passed herself, so neither party saw the final work.
