It is the result of more than 17 years of mapping effort by the Working Group on Amphibians and Reptiles of North Rhine-Westphalia. In addition to the distribution data, which cover a 100-year per…iod, there is a wealth of information on habitat, socialization, stocks, biometrics, threat and protection of all types. This wealth of data was the reason to create a handbook that deals almost exclusively with results and observations from this part of Germany. It was deliberately decided not to systematically incorporate literature from other states or beyond for comparison.
