Hard Cover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Included. First book club edition (no price on front flap), second printing. Signed by Willie Mays on half-title page. Publisher's black cloth-backed red boards with titles in gilt to spine, pictorial endpapers; original white dust jacket with photo collage to front panel featuring M…ays, Frank Sinatra, and Martin Luther King Jr., titles printed in black, jacket designed by Graphic Promotion Associates. Near fine with light spotting to spine; near fine jacket with touch of wear to head of spine, and light toning to jacket verso. Overall, a sharp copy with a fresh interior. "This memoir is a single story. It deals with a man and his occupation and his times-- three separate subjects. But when the times reflect the great civil rights revolution of America's post-war era; and when the occupation is baseball, so unique to the United States that in truth it triggered that revolution; and when the man is Willie Mays.then in fact it is one subject, not three." Willie Mays' Major League Baseball career started in the Negro Leagues with the Chattanooga Choo-Choos and the Birmingham Black Barons before joining the New York Giants at centerfield in 1951, and becoming the NL Rookie of the Year. After serving in the military for most of the 1952-1953 seasons, Mays made a triumphant return to baseball to lead the league with a .345 batting average and winning the National League MVP and the World Series in 1954. Nicknamed "The Say Hey Kid", Mays was one of greatest all around players baseball has ever seen. He finished his career batting over .300 (.303 lifetime), 12 Gold Glove Awards, winning his second NL MVP award in 1965, fifth all-time in career home runs (660), lead the league 4 times in both home runs and stolen bases, and one of only three players to record over 3000 career hits and 500 home runs. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979, his first year of eligibility. Signed.

Contact seller5-star sellerHard Cover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Included. First Edition. First edition, first printing. Signed and inscribed by Mays on front free endpaper: "To Joe / Best Wishes / Willie Mays." Publisher's green and orange cloth, with "Willie Mays" in blind to front board, and spine lettered in black and orange; in its original unclip…ped dust jacket designed by Bob Korn, with white front panel lettered in brown, orange and green, and a green spine. About fine book, with light fading to spine, and a hint of rubbing to foot of spine; very good price-clipped dust jacket, with light wear to spine ends and some edgewear. With Beckett Letter of Authenticity. Overall, a great, boldly inscribed copy. Presentation copies from Mays are exceedingly scarce. In this book, Willie Mays tells his life story with the help of prolific sportswriter Charles Einstein. Mays started playing professional baseball at 16 in the Negro Leagues and was soon drafted by the New York Giants. He went on to play 21 seasons with the Giants, winning a World Series with the team in 1954. His over-the-shoulder catch in that World Series is one of the most iconic moments in sports history. A 24x All-Star and a 12x Gold Glove award winner, Mays was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1979 and was voted to the Major League Baseball All-Century Team in 1999. Signed.

Hardcover. Condition: Near fine. Dust Jacket Condition: very good. First Edition. Small octavo, 168pp. A crisp, clean copy, near fine, with a touch of pinpoint rubbing to the spine ends and corners. in a very good dust jacket, with a few short tears, and the spine sunned, but no notable chips. This copy SIGNED by Willie Mays on…the half-title page: "Best Wishes, Willie Mays N. Y. Giants." On the same leaf is another, seemingly later inscription, which just reads "To J. B. Hennesey." This also looks to be in Mays's hand. We suppose that Hennesey owned this book, which had been signed around the time of publication, and he took it to a signing sometime later (in the 1970s or 80s?), where he had it personalized by Mays. Mays wrote another autobiography in 1988, which is typically more easily obtainable. We could find no signed copies of this mid-career autobiography in auction records. Copies signed near the time of publication are decidedly uncommon. A significant Willie Mays autograph, signed while Mays was still on the New York [not San Francisco] Giants.
