Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. George W. Lambert (illustrator). Stingaree by E. W. Hornung - Adventure Novel about a Gentleman Outlaw in the Australian Bush. Author of the Raffles Books. American Reprint Published in 1908 by Charles Scribner's Sons. Hardcover Format. English author Ernest William Hornung is mostly remembered as the creator of the exciting detective series featuring the wily Raffles, a gentleman thief. Hornung was a prolific author, whose works were admired by the likes of Rudyard Kipling and Arthur Conan Doyle. In fact, Hornung married Doyle's sister, Constance. Hornung set quite a few of his stories in the Australian outback, and "Stingaree" is one of those. It also appeared as a play. Stingaree is a gentleman outlaw - a stagecoach hold-up man - but he maintains a certain demeanor which reflects a developed sense of style, ego - and ethics, despite his dubious choice of career. The book is illustrated by artist George W. Lambert. This handsome hardcover is the Charles Scribner's Sons 1908 reprint. TITLE : Stingaree. AUTHOR : E. W. Hornung (Ernest William Hornung , 1866 - 1921) ILLUSTRATOR : George W. Lambert. IMPRINT : Charles Scribner's Sons. PLACE : New York DATE : 1908. EDITION : American Reprint PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION : Trade hardcover; contains seven monochrome plate illustrations, including frontispiece; 279 pages; approximately 5 1/4" x 7 1/2', cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering and embellishment. The cloth is a finely ribbed maroon; top text-block edge gilt. CONDITION -- VERY GOOD -- This is a previously owned book with moderate wear that remains clean and serviceable, with the following attributes and imperfections and noted: EXTERIOR - Spine extremities are compressed; head of spine is slightly frayed; gilt title and embellishment are bright. Board surfaces are mildly rubbed; there is just a touch of scuff to the rear board; top edge gilt is mildly rubbed, but basically still bright. BINDING - Solid. No leaves are detached or loose. INTERIOR - Frontispiece lacks tissue guard; A few of the leaf edges have tears where the first reader separated the leaves somewhat carelessly. I've shown a picture of the most egregious tear above with a magnified section, showing clearly the loss to that leaf edge. (The reader was a little too impatient to keep reading!) This is the only tear I spotted with such loss, however there are a few closed tears on other leaves. For the most part the interior is clean and unmarked.
Condition: Good. Good condition. (terminology) A copy that has been read but remains intact. May contain markings such as bookplates, stamps, limited notes and highlighting, or a few light stains.

Covers are very clean and intact except for slight darkening, tiny spots of discoloration, and two pinhole-sized punctures each on front and back. A Very Good copy. This is a promotional and informative pamphlet for Chilean iodine sold by the Chilean Iodine Producers. The booklet promotes Chilean iodine as a effective household remedy that can treat a variety of ailments. The introductory text describes the discovery of iodine in 1811, how Chilean iodine is the result of manufacturing Chilean nitrate, and has been an invaluable medical supply during the "great European war." The text then proceeds to describe different forms or solutions of iodine that can be treated for different injuries or ailments. The text says iodine is a "powerful antiseptic and counter-irritant" that can be used to treat, among others, asthma, aneurisms, hemophilia, Bright's disease, bronchitis, joint inflammation, ringworm, and cuts and skin abrasions. Iodine appears to be especially promoted as an effective treatment for superficial skin wounds. Pages 15-20 include "Directions for Use of Chilean Iodine." The following are some of the ailments addressed under "Directions": consumption, chronic rhematism, neuritis, chilblains, mosquito bites, scratches, bruises, sprains, and morning sickness. The Directions also recommend iodine in solution as a military antiseptic, throat gargle, or dental treatment. Example entry under Directions: "Chronic Pneumonia. To hasten the drying up of the inflammation rub the following ointment over the chest thoroughly--1/2 dram of iodine, 1 dram potassium iodide, 1 ounce lanolin.".
