Hardcover. Condition: Very Good Minus. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good Minus. 1st Edition. First Edition (SD). Once listed, this will be the Only signed copy for sale anywhere on the Internet. The signed inscription is on the title page. It reads: 'For ____: With much love + gratitude. Billy.' You can see the blue covers in the… photos. They have some light foxing/spotting. There's also a bump/crease at the front top corner. The yellow lettering on the spine is quite bright. There is a small indent just off the bottom edge of the spine and a little crinkling at the top edge. The front top corner with the bump has a speck-sized spot of rub-through, the other three corners are free of rubbing. The six edges are in very good shape. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The pages are exceptionally clean. Scrolling through them, I didn't see any soiling. There are around 15 consecutive pages over a few of the early chapters that have a very light crease visible only from the rear side of the page. I'm not seeing any other creasing. There are no turned-down corner creases or placeholder creases. There are no markings. No attachments. And the author's signed inscription is the only writing to be found anywhere in the book. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. It has a small loss at the front top corner, a teeny bit of loss at the top edge of the spine where there is also scuffing. There's a little more scuffing at the bottom edge of the spine and along the spine itself. The jacket is quite clean. The flaps are in solid condition. There is a strip of toning just off the top edges of both flaps. There are no tears, a couple of crinkles. The flaps are clean. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. From the dust jacket: "She was extravagant and self-indulgent, yet a disciplined and dedicated artist. She lived for many years in a blaze of notoriety, yet she was secretive and withdrawn. Her private letters are for the most part brief and impersonal, and though she was a pioneer of stage reform, she saw no need to commit her ideas to paper. Instead, she expressed them in the theatre. Her life was the life of the theatre." 'Interesting and eminently readable portrait of an extraordinary personality, Madame Vestris and the London Stage belongs to that rare class of books which are rewarding to the scholar and laymen alike. It makes use of fresh manuscript sources and contains twenty-five pages of illustrations, most of them previously on reproduced.' At the time of this books publishing, William W. Appleton was a Professor of English at Columbia University. Inscribed by Author(s).
