    Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Richard Doyle (illustrator). First Edition. HB first editions. Vol 1 published 1854, Vol 2 1855. Marble effect paper on board cover. Brown leather reinforced corners, leather spine + spine seams. Banded impressed decorated spine, impressed titles. 21.6 x 14.5cm Vol 1 = 380 pages, Vol 2 = 375 pages. Each book has a frontis. Illustrations on steel and wood. Story about Colonel Thomas Newcome and his son Clive. Their travels to India and Europe and romance. Set a decade or two after 'Vanitiy Fair'. It's greatest strength are the myriad references to popular and educational culture of the Victorian era through mention of poets, painters, novelists, politics, people, general events. Dotted with Latin, French, Italian, Ancient Greek phrases. Condition: Boards are in rough condition, need some renovating! Cracked, tears, binding showing, scraped and loss of colour. Harsh wear on spine leather pieces missing, boards showing on corners. Internally age spotting on e/ps. Some pages age discolouring on edges, but compared to the covers not bad condition. Text clear, very readable. illusts age discolouring but visiable. Given age at least they are still here. Fair condition overall.
