Contact seller4-star sellerTo most telephone users, "the telephone company" is one great business organism that operates from coast to coast. The service it renders is much the same whether your call originates in a large city or at a country store, well off the beaten track. And its service is universal, for from any telephone you choose, you may call an…y one of the other 32 million telephones in the United States and can reach most foreign countries and many ships at sea. Actually, however, our nation-wide telephone system is not controlled by one big company. It is a fabric composed of more than 6,000 telephone companies, not to mention some 60,000 rural telephone lines, mostly owned mutually by groups of farmers. Each of these is a separate operating unit and an independent financial entity. It is true that the Bell system, which first installed telephone service in this country under the patents granted to Alexander Graham Bell, does operate four-fifths of the telephones in the nation. But geographically speaking, as will appear from the map reproduced on the end papers of this book, two-thirds of the nation is the domain of the independents, ranging in size from a rural exchange with a single operator to substantial enterprises which serve a chain of important communities. These independent companies represent a protest against monopoly which has always been repugnant to the American people.
