Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Condition: Good. Good William P. D. Wightman's wide-ranging history of the development of scientific thought, tracing several of the dominant ideas that shaped science from antiquity through the modern period. Rather than presenting discovery as a simple procession of dates and famous names, Wightman examines how scientific concepts emerged, interacted, and gradually changed humanity's understanding of the natural world. Illustrated throughout in black and white, including a reproduced title page from Giovanni Alfonso Borelli's seventeenth-century De Motu Animalium. The volume comprises x, 495 pages. Wightman was a historian and philosopher of science whose work became part of the developing academic discipline of the history of science during the mid-twentieth century. The book is described bibliographically as a guide to the development of scientific thought through selected dominant ideas. Condition: Good. Original red cloth boards with black lettering and Yale University Press device to the spine. Cloth shows moderate rubbing, faint mottling and uneven discoloration, with light wear and softening at the corners and spine ends. Top edge is darkened and dust-soiled; remaining text-block edges show general age toning. Interior pages are moderately toned but appear clean and legible in the areas examined. No ownership inscriptions, underlining, or extensive annotations were observed in the photographed pages. Binding remains intact. Lacking the dust jacket. Please review all photographs for the most accurate representation of condition. An accessible mid-century survey of the history and philosophy of science, suitable for readers interested in scientific methodology, intellectual history, ancient and early-modern science, and the evolution of major scientific concepts. This 1953 Yale printing is not particularly scarce, but it remains a substantial and useful reference work. Carefully packed and shipped by KC Midwest Books. Domestic orders generally ship by USPS Media Mail unless another service is requested. International shipping is available; additional postage may be required for overseas orders. Returns accepted in accordance with AbeBooks' return policy. SCI 2b.…
