Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. The Author, George Cruikshank and John Leech (illustrator). 'The Biographical Edition' featuring "Ballads and Miscellanies". In very good bright red cloth boards, initials of author in gilt to front and titles to spine. The boards are flat and tight; spine sunned and spine ends bumped; small kink to front fore edge. The black end papers are unmarked. The text block is illustrated in black and white by The Author, George Cruikshank and John Leech and includes a frontispiece with quite clean tissue guard. The top cut edge is in gilt and the fore and tail edges are marked and deckled. The pages are level and secure, the prelims and some of the pages are lightly foxed. A few pages are uncut. Very good condition. No dedications etc. Publisher's list to rear. Without jacket.

The book has a woodcut engraved title page and a frontispiece 9one of the 12 plates) the contents and plate list (if there was one) are not bound in, the page after the title is chapter one? The text is complete and all plates present. Calf worn at spine and edges, page 29/30 has a rouche and closed tear top edge in margin, but all whole. Small octavo. Good+. 1st edition 1849. *The writer, dramatist and wit, contributed to Punch from issue number 2, wrote a number of plays in his early career, with many a success. This was published by the Punch Offices. He also coined the phrase, the palace of crystal, or, "Crystal Palace" at the Great Exhibition of 1851 prior to its opening and was picked up by Joseph Paxton and the name stuck. Charles Dickens was a pall-bearer at his funeral in 1857.
