Beautiful highly hand-coloured aquatint engraving after William Heath and engraved by Thomas Sutherland, showing the defense of the breached walls by British troops under Sir Sydney Smith and Hassan Bey's troops under the generalship of Ghezzar Pasha. With a page of letterpress of the scene and a letter sent by Smith to Lord Nelson on May 9th 1799. Some handling marks on the printed leaf, some very light age browning to white margins of the print and the odd light surface scuff, just seen when looking closely. Measures approx 10.6 x 14 inches (26 x 34 cm) *sir Sydney Smith is a man who's brilliance was always overshadowed by Nelson, (the favourite of the admiralty in London with the better allies there), helped defeat Napoleon here. And the siege lasting about 2 weeks with intense fighting daily was a bloody affair. Napoleon said of Smith "That man made me miss my destiny".

Im braunen, teils vergoldeten Holzrahmen hinter Glas/Passepartout gerahmt, rückseitig mit Haken zur Aufhängung. Nicht ausgerahmt. Maße Abbildung: 15,1 x 22,6 cm. Maße Rahmen: 37,5 x 42,7 cm. Rahmen mit leichten Gebrauchsspuren. Blatt außerhalb der Abbildung mit wenigen kleinen Fleckchen. Insgesamt sehr guter Zustand. Original aquatinta by Thomas Sutherland after William Heath. Framed in a brown partly gilded wooden frame behing glass/passepartout. Not examined out of frame. Dimensions picture: 15.1 x 22.6 cm. Dimensions frame: 37.5 x 42.7 cm.
