Paperback. Condition: New. What is mysticism? The question continues to be the subject of fierce debate. Some argue that all mystical experience is the same - it is an innate human ability - while others insist that the nature of mystical experience is highly conditioned by the cultural and religious background of the mystic. There is, however, no disagreement about the identity of the mystics themselves. In this book, William Harmless offers a highly readable introduction to the mystics and their message. Their message, he says, centers on three topics: who God is, how we meet God in prayer; and why the human heart is at once so deep, so beautiful, so selfish, and so hard to fathom. By introducing students and general reders to these figures, he hopes to stimulate reflection on these great questions, and deeper exploration of the world's mystical traditions.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Augustine: saint, bishop, theologian, former nuisance, and one of history?s most successful overthinkers. Augustine in His Own Words by William Harmless gives readers Augustine through carefully selected passages, allowing the great man to explain himself directly. This is helpful, because Augustine had a great deal to explain: sin, grace, memory, desire, God, time, friendship, Scripture, the soul, and why human beings are so spectacularly bad at being simple. Rather than being a dry ?about Augustine? introduction, this book lets Augustine?s own voice come through, guided by Harmless?s framing and scholarship. The result is part anthology, part spiritual map, and part encounter with a mind that never met a question it could leave politely alone. There is something wonderfully ironic about Augustine becoming a classroom-friendly edited volume. Here was a man wrestling with eternity, and here he is now, neatly arranged for modern readers with page numbers and academic respectability. It is probably what he would have wanted, after first worrying about whether wanting it was sinful. This good copy, as sold by Crappy Old Books, is ideal for readers of theology, church history, patristics, philosophy, and anyone who enjoys watching a brilliant mind turn inward, upward, and occasionally inside out. A thoughtful, serious book, but not a lifeless one. Augustine was many things, but dull was not among them.
