Contact seller4-star sellerpp. 91-114. Original wrappers. Near Fine. First Edition. SIGNED BY WILLIAM F. GIAUQUE (on front wrapper). Offprint of William F. Giauque's Nobel Lecture, December 12, 1949. The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1949 was awarded to William Francis Giauque "for his contributions in the field of chemical thermodynamics, particularly concern…ing the behaviour of substances at extremely low temperatures." "Thermodynamics is about heat and its transformation into other forms of energy--basically involving statistical descriptions of atomic and molecular movements. An important but difficult to grasp concept in thermodynamics is entropy, which is a measure of disorder in a system. The third law of thermodynamics states that the entropy in a perfect crystal is zero when the absolute temperature is zero. In 1933 William Giauque used a magnetic field to attain an extremely low temperature and was able provide evidence for the law's validity" (Nobel Prize website).

Contact seller4-star sellerOriginal wrappers. Most offprints have the ink stamp D. S. on the front wrapper, as well as a red pencil number. Very Good. First Edition. "Giauque received the 1949 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his research on chemical thermodynamics, particularly his pioneering and exhaustive investigations on entropy and low-temperature chemi…stry. He contributed greatly to establishing the third law of thermodynamics as a fundamental scientific law, invented the adiabatic demagnetization cooling process, and demonstrated the natural occurrence of oxygen's O17 and O18 isotopes and molecular hydrogen's ortho and para forms. Giauque's experimental researches were meticulous, most of them definitive, with improvements on his results coming only from refinements in technique" (D.S.B. 17: 337-38). According to the 1949 Nobel prize citation, Giauque was awarded the Nobel Prize "for his contributions in the field of chemical thermodynamics, particularly concerning the behaviour of substances at extremely low temperatures." The papers in this collection were published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society (15), the Physical Review (3), Industrial and Engineering Chemistry (1), and the Journal of Chemical Physics (1). There are 2 duplicate offprints, as well.
