Nowhere is this more apparent than in the Roman world, where there is no evidence to enable us to reconstruct what it felt like to be a child. We do. however, have ample evidence about the feelings and expectations that adults had for children. Thomas Wiedemann draws on this evidence to describe a range of attitudes towards children in the classical period. He examines how the literary conventions of ancient biography and rhetoric masked a genuine interest in childhood which can be found, for example, in more spontaneous literary forms such as letter-writing. He shows how that interest changed and developed over the centuries between the end of the Roman republic and late antiquity.
