Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No date in imprint; published circa 1850.The is volume's condition is rated Fair chiefly because the spine leather is gone. Book is shaken, with joints cracked and hinges intact; binding is very worn; edges of binding are chipped and rubbed; corners bumped; interior has foxing and soil. Both covers have gilt decorated panel with vertically oriented oval title decoration; surrounding the gilt panels are blind-tooled border decorations. 263 p., with frontispiece ("Beauty"), a "Presented to" color lithograph plate that has not been filled out, plus four more leaves of plates; all outer edges are gilt. Aside from the bare, chipped spine and wear at edges of binding, the cover gilt decorations are quite nice. Size: 7 3/8 x 5 1/8 inches. [otob: 2r].

"An effort to arrest the evil of drinking, and, if possible, to save some from the dangers of trifling with the drink-cup." This work on complete abstinence, from a religious perspective, offers commentary on the dangers of drinking with chapters on social reform, religion, personal safety, and Christian consistency. Written by Reverend Thomas Whittaker, a British minister and author. In the original full red cloth binding. Externally, smart with minor rubbing and fading to the extremities. The odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd spot. Minor age toning to the endpapers. Contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper with previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Very Good. book.

Some spotting to edges of text-block. Good in blue cloth, lettered gilt to spine. In a Poor jacket with moderate shelf-wear, damage to the spine-ends, and marking to the front panel. With the Masonic bookplate of E.H. Shackleton to the front pastedown (Not THAT E. Shackleton - even though he was a Mason. Curiously, I had a book with the same bookplate some 2 years ago and initially thought it was the explorer. However, research showed this not to be the case).
