Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 233 pages. Book itself has a brown leatherette type cover with white lettering on the spine, it is clean & tight. Dust jacket is protected in an archival quality Brodart cover. There is an approximately 3/4 of an inch tear in the dust jacket at the top of the front cover which is the reason for the condition downgrade. Dust jacket is not price-clipped. Contact seller4-star sellerSigned by the Author. Octavo, brown textured boards (hardcover), ix, 233 pp. Near Fine, with foxing (age darkened spotting) to page edges; in a Very Good dust jacket with light edgewear. From dust jacket: All realist when assessing a situation -- a man of vision when it came to plotting his course of action. This was Ray Hugh Garvey, liberal arts student at Washburn College, Topeka, Kansas, switching to law for a tuition advantage -- changing from legal work in Colby to real estate in Thomas County because sales were more profitable than drawing up the papers -- making land work for him by producing a crop while he was looking for a buyer. These early years set the pattern for Ray Garvey's many successes in farming; in building; in oil drilling and exploration; and most important of all, in a great chain of grain elevators from Kansas into Colorado and as far away as North Dakota. "Castles of the Plains," he called them but citadels of defense they really were when production outstripped distribution under the New Deal's regimented economy and the basic law of supply and demand was ignored. That his varied operations were so successful would seem to be a contradiction of Ray Garvey's economic convictions, for he is shown to be opposed to government controls, to retired acreage, to price supports. He tolerated the subsidy set up, but the biographer quotes him as saying, "We just operate under the program, we don't set it." How Ray Garvey operated under the program is an illuminating case history for students of economics, a veritable field trip for social historians. But this biography is much, much more than a textbook supplement. It has even greater significance as the portrait of a complex man, whose personal life and business accomplishments are a challenge and an inspiration to readers of all ages. American Biography, American Business, Kansas, Economics, Business, Economy, Americana. tcs.…

Add to basketPaperback. Condition: Very Good Plus. First Edition. Kokomo, IN: All-Fiction Field, Inc. [Popular Publications Inc.], 1951. First Edition. May, 1951 issue. One of two interior illustrations is by Virgil Finlay. Octavo, 112 pp. Pages age-toned as always, mild edgewear, some rubbing noticed on the rear cover, else remarkably sharp, well-bound, and clean. Overall, Very Good plus. FFM was a relatively long-lived entry in the pulp fiction periodical industry of the era, and, though it did, to a degree, indulge the (now classic) anonymous, semi-lurid, pulchritudinous cover art that was one of the selling points of the field, its included (generally, but not exclusively, later-rights) literature was of the first water within the sibling pulp genres of mystery, fantasy, horror, and science fiction. Most issues included only two to four stories (in fact, whatever it took to end up at about 112 pp.), at least one being of novella to novel length. In this issue, the lead and cover story is Robert W. Chambers' memorable The Slayer of Souls, and the cover illustration touting it shows a beautiful young lady of pallid countenance shrinking in horror from a ruby-hilted dagger in a long-nailed green hand, presumably that of the Slayer himself. With this May, 1951, issue, FFM began including illustrations, and there are two full-page illustrations herein, including a magnificent effort by the peerless Virgil Finlay. Also in this issue: Lukundoo (Edward Lucas White). A bright and still sturdy exemplar of a generally fragile genre, American pulp fiction. L81. Virgil Finlay (interior) (illustrator).…
