Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. A very good copy of the very rare, dust-jacketed first edition of Elena Whishaw's fascinating and unconventional exploration of the Atlantis question. Whishaw argued that southern Spain was not itself the lost continent, but rather an early colony or outpost established by the Atlanteans. She proposed that an ancient culture had arrived in Andalusia from Libya following the drying of the Sahara around 10,000 BC. Drawing on her archaeological investigations and excavations at Niebla, where she lived and founded a local museum, she cited cyclopean walls, ancient inscriptions and megalithic structures as evidence of this supposedly lost civilisation. An unusual and intriguing contribution to the literature on Atlantis and prehistoric Iberia. A rare book, particularly so in its original dust jacket. The pages are exceptionally presentable, with no inscriptions, notes or annotations and only the most minor expected signs of age. Profusely illustrated, with all illustrations present, although one plate is loose. The title page bears the scarce publisher's presentation wording, 'With the Publishers' Compliments', suggesting a presentation or complimentary copy. The binding is very good, with a slight lean but no structural issues. The original dust jacket, rarely encountered, remains largely intact and is unclipped. The front panel is clear and attractive, with some age wear and minor nibbling; the striking statue figure remains particularly impressive. The jacket spine is faded, while the rear panel is very good and retains the fascinating advertisements for other Rider publications. The rear flap is torn but largely present. The publication date is not stated, but this is identifiable as the first edition from its bibliographical characteristics. 1928 or 1929 is the date most frequently attributed to this issue. A particularly desirable and unusual edition for the serious Atlantis collector. Despite the faded jacket spine, some minor wear and nibbling, and the one loose plate, this is a remarkably presentable example of a genuinely scarce book, especially with its original dust jacket.
