Softcover. Condition: As New. Here is a guide to California's highest summit, for hikers, rockclimbers, or for those with an all-round interest in the High Sierra. Includes the history from the moment of its discovery by Clarence King in 1884 to the present time. The authors treat the geology, and the plant and animal ecology at the various levels, as the peak is climbed. The trail routes include those from Owens Valley and the approaches from the Trans-Sierra and the John Muir trails. Rock climbing routes are discussed in intimate detail by Tom Condon, and the routes are illustrated by a clear and accurate sketch of the Great East Face. A softcover pamphlet; 36 pages. Includes bibliographical references and index. With Tom Conden, Wheelock formed the Mountain Rescue Committee in 1959, precursor of the Training and Rescue Administration Committee. They started mountaineering instruction classes similar to the Basic Mountaineering and Leadership Training courses that were to follow some years later. From 1960 to 1963 Walt served on the Chapter Executive Committee. At various times he chaired the Desert Peaks Section and the Mule Pack Section, and was an active leader for the Cabrillo Section. He edited the Sierra Peaks Section newsletter and guest edited the special Fiftieth Anniversary (of the Chapter) issue of the Southern Sierran. Wheelock's greatest literary endeavor, however, was his creation of La Siesta Press, and the subsequent encouragement of many young writers who were published under its imprint. It was Wheelock who published the earliest works of John Robinson, the eminent Southern California mountain historian. The small booklets issued by the Press usually involved climbing subjects or field explorations in Southern California and northern Baja California, some of which were written by Wheelock himself.
