BOOK CONDITION: very good. The text block and illustrations are in fine condition, with no tears, dogears, or marks (except the four-panel foldout of photos of FDR since infancy is folded and frayed along one edge). The pages are age-toned. No signature or bookplate of a prior owner. Not a library book or remainder. The beige cloth boards are in good condition (bumped corners and spine). Dust jacket is in poor condition (torn edges with some pieces missing, worn covers, rubbing). 9 ¾ x 7 ½, 174 pages of text and many pages of photos and other illustrations. 36 ounces XX [From the author's NYT 1998 obituary] Don Wharton, an editor and a prolific writer of magazine articles, died on May 6 at his home in Manhattan. He was 92. Mr. Wharton's byline was familiar to readers of Look, The Saturday Evening Post, Collier's, Cosmopolitan, Reader's Digest and other magazines for nearly 50 years. He was also the author of ''The Roosevelt Omnibus'' (1934), an illustrated work about Franklin D. Roosevelt. Mr. Wharton, whose full name was Lacy Donnell Wharton Jr., was born in Smithfield, N.C., and went to work for The Greensboro (N.C.) Daily News after completing college. In 1929, he joined the staff of The New York Herald Tribune and from 1932 to 1935 worked for The New Yorker. He also served as literary editor and staff writer for Today magazine, associate editor of Scribner's magazine and roving editor for Reader's Digest, a position he held from 1958 until his retirement in 1976.
