Second edition, first printing (per publisher's number line upon copyright page). 88 pages. Hardcover; H 23.25cm x L 15.75cm. Dust jacket lightly rubbed with slight toning. Yellow cloth spine with blue boards. Ink ownership inscription on front pastedown mostly hidden underneath dj's front flap. A very good+ copy in a very good…dust jacket. THE SHOE BIRD, Eudora Welty's only children's story, was first published in 1964 by Harcourt, Brace & World, Inc. Per the anecdotal account of a fellow resident of Jackson, Mississippi's Belhaven neighborhood, Welty once professed to authoring THE SHOE BIRD in order to raise funds to repair the porch of her Tudor-style home which is now, of course, a National Historic Landmark. The first edition of this book is cited as #A14:1 in Noel Polk's EUDORA WELTY; A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF HER WORK but Polk was unable to include this second edition (which would have been #A14:2) within his authoritative reference. Yellow cloth, scuffing at lightly bumped spine ends, slight scuffing along top and bottom board edges. Welty's three-line ink inscription "For Cathy and Melinda | with best wishes, | Eudora Welty" upon the front free endpaper accompanied Welty's handwritten emendation of four musical notes (although this example drawn without staff/stave and clef) and "No . . . shoes!" between the second and third text lines at the top of page 72 due to the publisher's accidental omission of same. Interior pages are otherwise clean. Binding is firm. A very good+ copy in a good+ dust jacket. THE SHOE BIRD is Eudora Welty's only children's story and is cited as #A14:1 in Noel Polk's EUDORA WELTY; A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF HER WORK.
