This book investigates the legal concept of shared property as it appears in Egyptian papyri from the Greco-Roman Period, with particular attention to the forms communio pro diviso and communio pro indiviso. The latter concept, a type of shared property in which the exact shares of each owner are indeterminate, is particularly interesting, as it appears to have been more common in Egypt at that time than the more familiar communio pro diviso, in which shares are both determinate and alienable. After exploring the differences between these two forms of tenure, the author goes on to examine the various contexts in which communio pro indiviso appears, including property inheritance, wills, property sales, and mortgages. Through these examples, the author shows how communio pro indiviso was used to manage both real estate and non-corporeal property. The author concludes by arguing that communio pro indiviso was a flexible and adaptable form of property ownership that allowed Egyptians to manage their property effectively within a complex legal framework. The book's insights are not only significant for understanding the history of property law but also shed light on social and economic life in ancient Egypt.
