Condition: VG. 18pp extract, printed in double columns, illustrated with 15 drawings by the author, including 3 full-page plates, several closed tears at various pages have been neatly repaired with archival tape, salvaged from a damaged issue of Harper's New Monthly Magazine, Volume 95, No. 565, June, 1897. The Daup…hine, formerly Dauphiny, a province in southeastern France, and originally the County of Albon. From the opening paragraph, "If the 'play-ground of Europe' is over-crowded there is still plenty of room in the adjoining province of the Dauphine. It has long been known to Alpinistes, and not a few of the famous English climbers who have conquered peaks the world over, in the interest of art, science, and sport have first tried their skill and endurance on its redoubtable aiguilles, succeeding in some instances, after long having believed them impregnable." This is rotogravure and the image measures 10 1/4" x 7 1/2" with wider margins, slight dampstaining along right edge unaffecting print, small…closed tear to left margin, taped upper corner. This print depicts a brothel with girls on terrace greeting noble on horseback and retainer while older woman at door opens it suggestively. Rare type of subject matter for Weeks.
