A handsome late 18th-century full-leather binding, contemporary calf with a gilt Greek-key roll-tooled border to both boards and a spine decorated in compartments with raised bands, gilt florets/stars, and a red morocco spine label (label heavily chipped and worn, with the title largely lost — only "WA[TTS]" and a partial second line legible). There is a crack to the front board along the front hinge/joint, visible as a horizontal split in the leather roughly midway down the cover; the rear board appears sound. Corners are bumped and the leather shows general surface rubbing, scuffing, and light water-staining/mottling to both boards, consistent with age and handling. Marbled endpapers to front and rear in a grey/black and dusky-pink combed pattern. The front free endpaper carries an early ownership inscription, "John I. Harford, Jun.," along with a pencilled price notation ("£2") and an unrelated pen-and-ink sketch of a figure on the facing blank leaf. In Paper is toned with scattered foxing and some old dampstaining/creasing to a number of leaves, but text remains fully legible throughout. As noted, there is contemporary ink underlining and marginal notation to a portion of the text (see photographed example), which appears to be an early reader's annotation rather than damage. No loose or detached leaves were noted; the binding remains structurally intact aside from the described hinge crack.…

OCLC does not locate any copies but one was located at AAS #358124. Divided into two sections, the small songbook lists the words for 28 Divine Songs, followed by a list of the "10 Commandments" and the "Sum of the Ten," as well as words for 3 Hosannas, and "Glory to the Father." The section titled, "Moral Songs," lists the words for 8 songs. This is an early copy of a hymn book that was later revised and reprinted. …
