Paperback. Condition: Very Good+. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. B&W Illustrations; [Ephemera] Music Program. This is an informational booklet (oversized) for one of the tours in the 1970's for Fred Waring and the Young (New Young) Pennsylvanians. The booklet is in Very Good+ to Near Fine- condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. The text pages are clean and bright. Laid in is a program for one of the actual concerts (unfortunately there's no date, place, or even town listed on the program). "In 1947, Waring organized the Fred Waring Choral Workshop at his Pennsylvania headquarters in the old Castle Inn in Delaware Water Gap, Pennsylvania, which was also the home of Shawnee Press, the music publisher which he founded. At these sessions, talented musicians learned to sing with precision, sensitivity and enthusiasm. When these vocalists returned home and shared what they had learned with fellow musicians, Waring's approach to choral singing spread throughout the nation. The first Fred Waring Music Workshop in the western United States was held in June 1968 as part of the University of Nevada's Summer Session curriculum in Reno, Nevada. Waring taught and supervised these summer workshop for 37 years, continuing right until the day he died.".

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Published during the first year of America's direct involvement in World War II, Sky Anchors was composed by famed bandleader and broadcaster Fred Waring at the request of the officers and cadets of the United States Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida. According to the printed dedication, the song received its first performance on January 2, 1942, and was intended to inspire the personnel of U.S. Naval Aviation. The striking cover incorporates an official U.S. Navy aerial photograph framed by patriotic red, white, and blue graphics alongside the Naval Aviator wings insignia, creating one of the more visually compelling wartime aviation sheet music designs of the period. This copy remains in Very Good+ condition. The cover retains bright original color with light edge wear, mild corner rubbing, and a faint contemporary pencil ownership notation at the upper margin. Interior pages are clean, bright, and entirely unmarked with no writing, musical annotations, tears, or repairs observed. The center fold remains sound and the sheet lays flat. The rear cover advertises Fred Waring's contemporary wartime 'New Service Songs' series, including titles for the Armored Forces, Merchant Marine, Naval Aviation, Parachute Troops, and Quartermaster Corps, providing an appealing period artifact documenting American military music publishing during World War II. The striking cover, signed in the artwork by illustrator Robert Holley, combines an official U.S. Navy aerial photograph with patriotic red, white, and blue graphic elements and the Naval Aviator wings insignia, creating one of the most visually appealing WWII aviation sheet music designs of the period. Holley was among America's foremost commercial sheet music illustrators during World War II, and his work helped define the visual identity of patriotic music published for the American home front. Fred Waring (1900-1984) was one of America's most influential bandleaders and choral arrangers. During World War II he became closely associated with patriotic broadcasts, military performances, and morale-building music. His 'Pennsylvanians' orchestra was among the nation's best-known radio ensembles, and he worked extensively with the U.S. military to produce songs supporting the war effort. Illustrator Robert Holley (1912-1977) was a prominent commercial artist whose work appeared in Esquire magazine before World War II. As co-founder of the celebrated Immerman-Holley Art Studio (IM-HO), Holley and his associates produced artwork for more than 200 sheet music covers, dominating the wartime music publishing industry. Contemporary estimates credited the studio with producing artwork for as much as 80% of the sheet music cover illustration business during the height of WWII, making Holley's signed covers increasingly appreciated by collectors of American graphic design, music publishing, and wartime ephemera. Robert M. Holley (illustrator).
